Bryant Waterfal Day Spa 657-0186 JUST ARRIVED Ty Beanie Babies China readies for exclusive birthday bash BEIJING (AP). Most ordinary folks those who work in Beijing's teahouses, grocery stores, offices and factories won't be lining the streets today to watch the festivities for communist China's 50th birthday. They're not invited. Chinese leaders are leaving nothing to chance for their show of national power, a parade of 500,000 participants in the morning and dance for 100,000 guests at night. Only the select have been given passes.

Everyone else will have to watch it live on TV or seek out other entertainment. Any, grumbling about that on Thursday was good-natured or guarded. The 50th anniversary, after all, is the ruling Communist Party's party, and while people have freedom to grouse about most things, criticizing the leadership publicly is too risky. Wangfujing has been jammed shoulder with crowds out to admire the city's new look. "Our country is definitely on the road to becoming strong and prosperous, so that's what makes National Day very exciting," she said. Twenty years ago, those who didn't share the nationalistic thrill of the holiday had few options.

But China has changed dramatically, and Beijing, a city of more than 10 million people, is no longer the gray, cautious place it once was. Managers at the Hotspot Disco, where scantily clad dancers perform in cages, and the Butterfly Bar, one of the capital's few gay bars, said no one told them to change anything except the Butterfly had to cancel its transvestite dance cabaret because of controls on noise for National Day.
