Community' colleges in Nevada have two unusual characteristics: They are part of the state university system and although relatively new they serve the scattered population quite well There are community college campuses or centers within an drive of more than 98 per cent of the residents By contrast to community colleges in most other states Nevada's colleges are financed with state funds rather than local school district funds inancially they are treated simply as a unit of the state university system Public funds are sup plemented by student tuition currently of $8 per credit hour plus $250 for capital investment and student fees for a gross fee of $1050 per credit hour new 'system' of com munity colleges just in its fourth year has grown from a first year enrollment of 1740 students to a 1974 75 enrollment of more than 13000 students They attend classes on four campuses at Las Vegas Reno Carson City and Elko and at 22 local community rural centers scattered throughout the state These centers are satellite to the larger campuses Dr Charles Donnelly president of the Community College Division expects continued growth with emphasis on occupational education The enrollment of the colleges is 65 per cent occupational Another 25 per cent of the students are studying courses that prepare them to go on into four year college programs Developmental courses serve 5 per cent of the enrollment and 5 per cent of the students are enrolled in com munity service courses such as law enforcement and fire science Dr Donnelly attributes the rapid public acceptance of community college education in Nevada to the wide diversity of courses and the convenient times and places at which they are offered The diversity of courses offered comes from the established policy of the community colleges to direct its services into five areas training Business industrial public service and health occupational courses are taught at all the colleges and agriculture is taught at Elko parallel courses These offer the first two years of regular college work and transfer to the universities for regular college credit courses These courses assist students in removing deficiencies in subjects such as English reading or mathematics so they can qualify for regular college courses or for occupational study service These courses primarily for adults im prove job skills prepare 1 them for a new occupation or develop recreational skills The colleges em phasize counseling to help students make career decisions and to follow studies best suited to their aptitudes and opportunities mining camps is Eureka which is now noting anupswing in mining and agriculture Eureka County Upswing Noted A revival in mining and agriculture hold bright prospects for Eureka County in 1975 Mining which has been on a minimal level for several years is picking up ac cording to two Reno based firms Arthur Wilson vice president of Idaho Mining said the prospects look promising for gold mining Peter Galli Jr of Galli Explorations has been operating explorations for the past year and has reopened five mines to date in the Dunderberg Hamberg Belt Agriculture is also in creasing in relation to other Nevada counties has been growing over the past said Edmund Barmettler state extension economist agricultural com munity is firmly established in the Desert Land Entries area The farmers are really building up their communities and even with the growing potential hurt because of high wind this season it does look Barley hay alfalfa and wheat make up the majority of the crops with cattle supplementing the economy Along with the upswing in mining and agriculture Eureka County has taken on many other changes In addition to the new high school both the courthouse and the old Sentinel newspaper building are being refurbished to com memorate the bicentennial with the courthouse already taking on a look of bright red with white trim Activities in the county are centered around the ourth of July parade which is sponsored by the volunteer fire department and donations from local merchants The Veterans of oreign Wars hosts the VW rodeo in August with entries coming from
