Sparks Stewart Play Crucial Game To 6 6 Deadlock i Emphasis Placed on Reno's Tussle at Sparks Thursday By JOHN BRACKETT STEWART Nov Both teams hungry for the elusive state football championship title Sparks High School and Stewart Indian School elevens battled to a 6 to 6 tie here today before a crowd estimated at 1000 persons 1 he state cham pionship hinged on the outcome of today's game but the ques tion now is still undecided Neither Sparks nor Stewart have lost a Nevada high school game this year and if Sparks can hurdle Reno next Thursday the teams may claim a co cham pionship Stewart has ended its season Sparks capitalized on breaks to score its six points today while the Braves from Stewart passed their way for their score Statistically Stewart was the best team on the field but with the exception of the third quarter both teams appeared evenly matched A woe fully weak pass defense stopped the Sparks Maroons who had rolled along this year with high scores in winning from six oppo nents Stewart beaten only once this year by Bishop when the first string Brave backfield was ineligible played a terrific game attempting to garner a victory and lay undisputed claim to the state championship A des perate field goal attempt the first play in the fourth quarter ended the chance to score al though the outcome of the contest may have been different had it not been for costly penalties which plagued both teams as they drew within paydirt distance Sparks drew a six point lead as the first quarter drew to a close and after both teams had fought in midfield for small gains Gar della of Sparks backed Stewart up to its own five yard line with a long punt from his own 35 Despite a five yard penalty the Braves mo tored to their own 26 where they were held for downs Shea Scores A bad pass from center sent the ball soaring over head and he was dropped on the Stew art four as he recovered the ball A penalty against Stewart gave Sparks half the distance to the goal and on the first play Merlin Shea plowed over Jackie for the score attempted place ment was wide Stewart came back strong as the second quarter opened until a fum ble stopped the march Matteoni a piledriver in the Sparks backfield all the game rambled around right end for 15 yards and Gardella Matteoni and Shea alternated in carrying the ball to the Stewart 20 where Stew art held for downs Stewart started a drive which ended when Blake Sparks quarter back intercepted a pass on his own 49 Gambling on a fourth down play Sparks with Gardella carry ing made more tnan enougn tor a first down but Gardella fumbled and Stewart recovered on the Brave 39 The Braves then started pitching for a score Set back 15 yards for clipping the Braves sent Kitchen back to pass to Smith for a 42 yard gain to the Sparks 10 A pass and a running play failed to gain and then Kitchen tossed a perfect areial to Smith in the end zone for the score attempted conversion as blocked ending the scoring for the game Stewart held the cards in the third quarter Sparks kicked to the Braves who took the ball on their own 35 and made first down after first down to the Sparks 23 before they lost the ball What might have turned into a score was off set when Stewart was offside El lingsen jaunted 23 yards to the Sparks two before being hauled down but the play was called back Sparks took the ball but wras High School ootball Picture May Rest on Reno Sparks Outcome Now what A clean cut win for either Sparks or Stewart yester day would have cleared up the western conference and Nevada state high school picture As it stands now Sparks and Stewart have perfect records in Nevada play marred only by their mutual tie game Should Sparks win from Reno this Thurs day in the finale the Braves and Railroaders could be called co champions of the state and conference An official rul ing by the scholastic association may be made after games White Pine plays at Las Vegas the same day for the east ern zone title Vegas has lost one Nevada game White Pine two Should Reno beat Sparks then the Indian school will emerge from the elimination process as the state's outstanding eleven and worthy of the trophies It is not known if Vegas will have a claim for a title game if Ely is upset Thursday Many fans phoned the Journal sport office last night asking for a special championship playoff oh Mackay ield between Sparks and Stewart should Sparks turn back Reno Thursday for 15 yard gains several times in the game Shea Blake and Gardella in the Sparks backfield turned in good games YARDSTICK Sparks after two consecu tive losses which amounted to 18 yards Lewis all state tackle last year and Hilpert Brave end crashed through the Sparks line to drop Matteoni for both losses Lewis Tries Goal The Braves took the ball on the Sparks 41 and went to the Sparks 13 as the third quarter ended Lew is tried a field goal on the fourth down but the attempt was wide The teams fought evenly in the fourth period with Sparks trying desperate passes that failed to con nect Two of the aerials were just too long for Yuill Sparks end Sparks penetrated to the Stew art 29 in the final minutes but was set back 15 yards for slugging Stewart had the ball when the game ended backfield of Ellingson elster Keliiaa and Kitchen played a bang up game all the way el ster was the consistent ground gainer of the day and snagged many of the spot passes thrown by Kitchen who not only tossed the aerials but bucked the line for Stewart Lewis Hilpert and Smith were the outstanding players of the Stewart line which yielded ground slowly to the Sparks Maroons Van Meter Sparks center and Garrett guard were outstanding for Sparks in the line Wise big tackle played a good game Most of the defensive work was left to the Sparks backfield which has to come in fast time aftei time to stop the Stewart ground plays Sparks held its own on the ground but the pass1 defense was weak enough to yield almost as many yards as were given up on the ground The sparkling off tackle sweeps by Matteoni espe cially during the last quarter were a feature of the game He was off STARKVILLE Miss Nov 23 (UR) Mississippi undefeat ed Maroons bottled up the highly touted touchdown com bination of Merle Hapes and Junie Hovious cut loose with a smashing running led by Harvey Johnson and Billy Jefferson and handed the University of Missis sippi its second defeat of the sea son 19 0 today before 25000 rain soaked fans in Scott Stadium The victory gave Mississippi State the traditional and marked first con ference defeat Previously the reb els had bowed 21 20 in an upset to Arkansas Mississippi State gained 273 yards rushing to 124 for Missis sippi and State made 17 first downs to 8 for Ole Miss Large Crowd Attends Skiing Movies Here A crowd of more than 400 per sons last night attended the show ing of Dr rank ski pictures at the Civic Auditorium More than 900 feet of film in technicolor and with sound effects was shown Included in the pic tures were scenes of skiing at Sun Valley Mount Rose the Sugar Bowl and Mount Lassen Scenes of water skiing at Treasure Island ended the show Benefits of the show will go ANGELES Nov 23 The University of Washington Huskies disappointed because they missed an expected jaunt to Pasa Rose Bowl on New Day came south today and took out their anger on a hapless UCLA football team which wras smoth ered under a 41 to 0 score before 35000 fans in Memorial Coliseum Dean McAdams star Husky halfback and big gun in the Wash ington offense passed for two touchdowns and crossed UCLA goalline personally for an other tally Can Tie for Title victory kept the Huskies in the running for equal claim with Stanford for the Paci fic Coast Conference title if Stan ford should lose to California next Saturday at Berkeley 20 to 10 victory over Washington two weeks ago however insured Stanford tne western Rose Bowl bid Washingtons first score in the opening period of ball game was a McAdams pass when the Huskies bogged down on the UCLA 19 yard line Quarterback Don Means called his own num ber on the receiving end of a trick pass play and was all by himself in the end zone to from placement Pass interceptions which broke up last minute scoring gambles by UCLA led to the final pair of touchdowns Berg intercepted a pass by Ted orbes UCLA half back and returned to the UCLA 47 Seeks Racing in Arizona Phoenix Ariz Nov 23 (UR) A delegation of Phoenix businessmen announced today they would peti tion the next state legislature to repeal horse racing and pari mutuel betting laws The plans were disclosed here at the state tax hear ing into the application of Houssels of Las Vegas Nev to stage a 15 day horse race meet here beginning January 11 posed of Kot Hatalla orson and Pettiti skirted the ends time after time breaking away for stricky runs which rolled up 268 yards rurally I' ir I Pass defense was the only frosh weak spot and the visiting Pan thers connected with eight aerials for 164 yards red orson scored on a one yard plunge in the opening quar ter and Jack Pettiti place kicked the conversion On the first play after the next kickoff Chapelle of Salinas broke away from his own 37 yard stripe and gqlloped 63 yards through a broken field to a touchdown Kennedy plunged over for the conversion to tie the score The winning touchdown came in the third period when Tommy Kot hurled a bullet pass over the goal to loyd Edsall and the reliable Pettiti kicked the extra point That accounted for the scoring but there were numerous drives by both teams which were staved off by determined fighting In the op ening quarter the freshmen pene trated to the Salinas 10 yard stripe and again to the 17 while the Panthers marched to the Ne vada three In the second period the Wolf Cubs moved to the 25 while in the third Salinas threatened twice reaching the Ne vada 18 and 30 The last quarter found the yearlings motoring as far as the Salinas 10 Potter Shaws Star The frosh line fought the Pan thers to a Standstill with Danny Potter and the Shaw brothers playing particularly smart ball loyd Edsall the rangy wingman from Sparks served notice he will be hard to beat out of a varsity end berth next year Tackling pass catching and punting Edsall play ed outstanding football tackles were strong The speed and elusiveness dis played by Kot Hatalla and orson could be well used on the Nevada varsity The yearling backs were particularly agile at dodging tack lers and each of the trio threaded back and forth through a broken field taking best advantage of good blocking orson ran the opening kickoff back 40 yards and combined with Hatalla in marching down to the Salinas 10 where the visitors dug in and held After a short Salinas punt the Wolf Cubs hammered back again Kot and Hatalla slash ed through guard and tackle and finally orson smashed over from the one yard stripe Pettiti con verted After a short kickoff Salinas was unable to gain rom a deep punt formation Chapelle ran off left nally held on the Panther 17 or son returned the kickoff 35 yards up the center of the turf and on the next play orson took a lat eral from Kot and scampered 48 yards more Salinas held for downs After an exchange of punts Ha talla ripped into the Salinas line for two good gains down to the 30 but Salinas recovered fumble on the next play Open Passing Drive The visitors came right back discovering a traditional Nevada weakness on pass defense Leon ard hurled one to Chappclle who lateraled to Branson then chucked one to Murphy Chappclle rounded end for a first down on the Nevada 10 then passed to Corda on the five yard stripe Turner and Chap pelle cracked into the Nevada line twice but met a stone wall and onthe next two attempts to circle end were brought down fqr losses with crashing tackles by orson and Kot? In the second half Salinas open ed up wilh some plays similar to those bringing Stanford success this year The quarterback chuck ed laterals to a halfback playing far out on the flank some 20 yards away and the latter then hurled forward passes But the freshmen pulled some passing of their own from the bag and accounted for the winning touchdown via the air Kot twirled a 30 yard aerial to Hatalla who was dragged down on the Salinas 45 by the safety man Two short plunges by Kot and Hatalla min gled with a pair of passes from Kot to Edsall The first Edsall leaped high the air to drag down and caught the second one a bullet like throw in the end zone Pettiti again converted Leonard put Salinas in position in this see saw game by running the kickoff to the Panther 40 Here the Panthers uncorked a forward double lateral pass play Leonard to Chappelle to Branson back to Chappclle On the 40 Cornet took a lateral and forward passed to Turner who made a great leap ing catch on the 30 Chappclle snatched another aerial on the 22 It seemed that the air drive would wind up in a score but orson in tercepted one toss and galloped back to the 18 The remainder of the quarter was featured by long run back of a punt and his long re turn on an interception The last quarter was featured by 25 yard gain on a cutback and 45 yard dash down the center when returning a kick The Amid Severe Cold SPOKANE Wash Nov Halfback Billy Sewell of Washington state college pitched and ran his team to a 1 1 to 7 foot ball victory over Gonzaga univer sity today before 8000 fans numbed by cold After hard running fullback Cecil Hare reeled off a 62 yard touchdown dash in the first period Sewell came back in the second quarter to pass his club to a 7 7 tie and then with little more than half the last period to go again uncorked a touchdown march to provide the winning tally A Washington State touchdown in the final seconds of the game was nullified when officials called an off side penalty halfback Tony Can adeo sparked the Bulldogs to with in the WSC goal several times but the veteran Cougar line held firm The field streaked with snow caused numerous fumbles and both teams capitalized on breaks to score touchdown came when Hare broke around left end and behind perfect blocking scooted in to the open for the 62 yard run Canadco converted Opening a passing attack in the second period from his own 30 yard line Sewell rifled the ball to Suse off and letcher for a steady march that ended with letcher crossing the goal standing up The second WSC score was en gineered after Canadco fumbled on his own 31 and the Cougars recov ered Sewell passed to Greeley who went to the Gonzaga 16 and then to the 8 Renfro drove to the three and two plays later Sewell went through the line for the score Johnson made both extra points for WSC Oscar Vitt Talks Of Portland Job OAKLAND Calif Nov 23 (UR) Oscar Vitt former manager of the Cleveland American League baseball team said he would leave here tonight for Portland Orc to confer with owners of the Portland Pacific Coast League team on man aging the team for 1941 Vitt said he had been assured by a major league team that if he ob tained the Portland position the major league organization would enter into an agreement with Port land for farming players Vitt did not disclose identity of the major league team Yardage Dame under its worst defeat in four years today 20 to 0 before an overflow crowd of 48600 The Irish simply were no match for the bruising power football Northwestern fired relentlessly at their guards and tackles And so the Irish collapsed giving up one touchdown in the second period and two more in the third ns Northwestern rolled its first vic tory over Notre Dame since 1935 Another Goldberg It's been four long years since Notre Dame took a lacing like this Back in 1936 Pittsburgh and its Marshall Goldberg whipped the ft Irish 26 to 0 There was something like a Goldberg in Dyche Stadium today tall stoop shouldered Don Clawson a junior fullback with a triphammer stride Big Don opened the scoring near the end of the second ieriod bull ing his way 30 yards into the end zone after receiving a short pass from Rill De Correvont Notre Dame was driving as the half ended carrying 30 yards to 25 but that one splurge spent their power and emo tion There was nothing left with which to fend off Northwestern's drive with the second half kickoff and the Wildcats stop mov ing until they had covered 72 yards for touchdown No 2 This was Rill De drive His 27 yard run from Notre Dame's 36 to the nine was the most brilliant of his collegiate ca reer Bill Goes Over It was De Correvont who scored slanting through Notre Dame's right tackle from the four yard line He made it still on his feet Once again Erdlitz kicked the ex tra point A 35 yard run by ullback Milt Piepul sparked a 57 yard Irish drive on the next kickoff best of fense of the day for Notre Dame but when Northwestern punted out Bob Hargrave fumbled and Leon Cook recovered for Northwestern on the Irish 23 On second down with four yards already lost the Wildcats turned it over to Clawson once more and he barreled over his own right tac kle cut wide toward the sideline and kept his feet as one after an other of the secondary hit him Jimmy Smith an end missed the try for extra point but it was Northwestern 20 Notre Dame 0 and nothing the Irish could do in the fourth period could alter that Penn State Loses irst of Season PITTSBURGH Nov The Pitt Panthers smashed Penn State into the defeated class today with a 20 to 7 victory in the Nit tany final game of the sea son The Panthers in their farewell home appearance before 31000 fans took a lead in the opening period on a fast breaking reverse play and never were headed State made nine first downs to 7 but the Panthcrr out rushed the Nittany Lions 183 yards to 115 Penn State completed nine out of 20 passes for 82 yards Pitt completed two out of right for 3G yards including a 20 yard touch down pass A 4.
