case in Sacra mento San rancisco Susanville Stewart Richmond and every other place enjoys amateur boxing success if they were given a good place to train consistent coaching and a schedule out whereby they could com pete in dual meets at least four times before the big spring tourn aments (San rancisco Golden Gloves Pacific AAU and Reno Golden Gloves) Bill 120 yard hurdles but it was only because Cochrane former University of Indiana star took a day off from his duties as a coxwain at the Great Lakes Naval Station today and ran the fastest 440 yard hurdle on record Competing in a special invita tional affair at the 33rd annual Drake relays and running without anyone to force he was clock ed in 522 seconds The accepted world record was 626 set in 1927 by John Gibson of ordham Dale Kulitz of Mich igan ran second but finished more than 40 yards behmd John Sharp of Oklahoma was third and Jim Gilliland of Louisiana State was fourth Only one other record was set 1 during the afternoon program as unfavorable weather hampered the 1 athletes and kept the crowd down to about 10000 880 in 1:259 That was in the half versify relay which was great Ohio State team cantured the 440 and races The Buckeyes ran the half miles in 1:259 knocking one tenth of a second off the mark set by Iowa in 1935 Ralph Hammond a Negro sprint er who was one of the outstanding individuals in the two
