funds for a pet con gressional project federal grants to states for rural library service It voted 94 to 71 to uphold the action of its appropriations com mittee in raising to $5 million President $3 million request for the program Nearly all Democrats present voted for the increase May Be Restored The action came as the House continued work on Mr Eisen $29 billion budget for the Departments of Labor and Health Education and Welfare It has voted tentatively to cut the bill by $155 million plus a $203 mil lion cut ordered by the appropria tions committee However Rep John ogarty (D I) floor manager of the bill said he and his supporters wefe determined to restore some of the tentative cuts He said their drive would start next Tuesday or Wednesday Rep Gordon Canfield (R J) told his colleagues they have been making cuts in Mr Eisen $718 billion budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 Request Slashed He said $276 million out of total claimed reductions of $802 million in money bills handled so far in volve such things as veterans pen sions and grants to the states for the aged He said these payments must be made sometfme Meantime the House appropria tions committee ordered in junction prevented the tax commission from closing the Thunderbird hotel for at least a six month pe riod hotel attorneys told the state supreme court today In one of the longest oral arguments in the high history attorney Richard Blakey of Reno said the question before the justices was simply whether the injunction was proper Gambling licenses held by Marion Hicks and former Lt GrOv Clifford Jones in the Thunderbird casino were or dered revoked effective June 1 1955 if the two men did not dis pose of their interests They were not ordered out of the hotel land lord corporation however The revocation order was issued by the tax commission April 25 1955 on grounds the two men were unsuitable to hold gambling licenses This was based on a commission contention they had permitted eastern gamblers George Sadlo and Jake Lansky to hold secret financial interests in the casino Sadlo had loaned Hicks $160000 shortly after the lush Las Vegas strip hostelry was completed At the time of the commission in vestigation two years ago it was discovered that Lansky owned one half of the loan Hicks who along with Jones was present in the court has con tended throughout the lengthy litigation that he had no idea whatever that Lansky owned any portion of the loan Shortly before the revocation order would have become effec tive District Judge Merwyn Brown of Winnemucca issued the injunction preventing the com mission from carrying out its revocation edict This was appealed by the com mission to the supreme court morning session was devoted to case presentation by contending attorneys An unu sual afternoon session of the court found the justices questioning randsen Loomis and Charles Springer representing the tax commission and Blakey closely on two basic questions: 1 Was the lower
