inches fell at Yelland ield with a moisture content of 19 of an inch Begin ning Detore six last evening storm continued all night but clear skies Monday Jewkes Garage Damaged by ire WELLS Jan 11 (Special) Damages expected to run between two and five thousand dollars re sulted from an explosion and fire which swept Jewkes Brothers ga rage on Sixth St in Wells at 10:20 am Sunday Gene Jewkes co owner and manager of the business with his brother Kenneth had just fin ished running a truck but of the shop and was preparing to set up another to be worked on when he heard the explosion and turned to find the entire rear of the building in flames A series of lucky circumstances kept the fire from completely de molishing the business They rang ed from the fact hat Jewkes had moved all but a 1936 ord out of the shop during the morning to the fact that approximately a third of the Volunteer iremen happened to be in a position to see the smoke roll up from the explosion and had the fire equip ment on its way before the alarm was turned in The volunteers had the fire under control in 20 min utes Windows were blown out auto mobile paints and lubricants burned up equipment tools and stock badly damaged by both fire and smoke The 1936 sedan a stolen car stored at the garage by Wells police until its owner claimed it was virtually demol ished The fire did not break through the roof but burned raft ers and charred the roofir so badly a partial new roof will be necessary WELLS Jan li Bradley was re elected warden of St Barnabas Episcopal Mission in Wells at the annual parish meeting held at the Swett home following Sunday church services conducted in the Mission chapel at four pm by the Rev Brockman of St Episcopal Church Elko A candle lighting service cele brating the beginning of Epiphany was a part of the ceremony of worship at the mission preceding a council meeting at which church business for 1949 was concluded Mrs Coleman Brown was elect ed clerk of the parish for the new year to serve with Mrs Phil Sharp elected treasurer of the parish Mrs Swett was elected member of the church council and also a delegate to the annual convocation to be held in Las Vegas in April Mrs McElrath was selected as an alter nate delegate St budget pledges and the every member canyass to be completed within the week were also on the business agenda Mrs Harry Bricker president of St Barnabas Guild and Mrs Swett president of district No two Episcoal Guilds of Ne vada acting hostesses served a light lunch at the conclusion of the evening Mrs George Wittemye past chairman of the Wells Girl Scout Association discussed the records covering both troop and individual Scouting activities which should be available in the well kept troop record book as principal speaker on the
