the job of the grazing district fieldmen Meth ods and procedures for the hand ling of problems in the field which are common to all regions will be studied Each man will participate in the schedule of the school part of which will be discussion and part of which will be field work The study area for the school is a block of approximately 180 000 acres of typical grazing land in the San Rafael Grazing district within which is the Mud Springs side camp location which will be used as headquarters for the con ference group The school will be of approxi mately three duration af ter which the representatives of each region present will return to their respective regions and im part to other regional and dis trict employes as much of the in formation learned as is possible through the holding of similar but smaller range schools State Senator William Dressier of Because it is really the result of two diseases making a joint attack and is not a single simple disease the Milk mosaic of potatoes calls for particularly painstaking pre cautions by the scientists who are working to control the disease by breeding immune varieties The condition recognized as milk mosaic results from the joint action of what the scientists identify as Virus and Virus Neither of these working alone causes serious symptoms or cuts production mate rially but acting together they may reduce the yield from 15 to 25 per cent Virus is ordinarily trans mitted in the tubers used for plant ing stock Virus A is carried from plant to plant by aphids Several of the most important potato varieties including Green Mountain Tri umph and Rural New Yorker har bor Virus but mature good crops if they can be protected from aphids carrying Virus A Kathadin a new potato developed in the breeding work of the depart ment of agriculture never suffers from milk mosaic in the field be cause it has some quality that pre vents infection by aphids However it may contract Virus in the field A method of identifying Virus is to inject potato plant juice into Jim son weed or red pepper plant which react if there is Virus present to NOXIOUS WEED WORK SPEEDS In most parts of Nevada there is adequate feed insect pests is being studied by two scientists at the University of California It is known that insect pests can be killed by passing them through an electrostatic field established between two electrodes The field is subject to a periodic charge and discharge by an oscillating electric circuit Although the real mechanism by which changes occur in materials passed through electrical fields has not been established with cer tainty various cereal weevils al ready can be controlled perman ly by this method The farmers have cut and stacked most of the third crop alfalfa and while it was youngest member of the Lake Tahoe gun club who brought in a 185 pound forked horn buck from the Tim berland tract district about 6:30 a The lad who made his kill be fore breakfast close to his lake shore home had the deer dressed and in the ice box with the help of his neighbor Jim erguson and was off to his classes at Tahoe Branch of Placer Union high school by the 8:30 a bus stepfather Charles Swanson and Bob Wallace high way maintenance foreman went over into the back country to hunt their deer but no word has come regarding their success The second hunter in was Chris Boyarides of Tahoe Tavern who got a forked horn deer at Uage Meadows Invitations to stockmen ranch ers business men and others in terested in management and use of desert ranges were being wide ly distributed this week through out Nevada and Utah following ihe announcement by Reed Bailey director of the Intermoun tain orest and Range Experi ment Station that plans for the third field day program to be held at the Desert Branch 50 miles west of Milford Utah September 21 27 were complete To assure accommodations for all visitors and avoid over taking the accomondations at the Branch Station the field days for the first time will bo divided into two parts with the 26th and 27th reserved for Nevadans Results covering seven years of intensive experimental work in the utilization and management of the desert type ranges on the 55000 acrc research laboratory will be demonstrated to the several hun dred expected visitors from all ad joining states "The main purpose of these field Director Bailey ex plained to make immediately available to the livestock men of the intermountain area and range managers the important current information resulting from the Desert Branch experiments so that better practices may be promptly applied on the range Although results of research are eventually published as govern ment bulletins that procedure requires time and lack of ap propriations frequently causes de lays By actually going over the ground viewing the experiments and methods employed stockmen and others are able to gain a much better picture of the results and their practical The Desert Branch Station ori ginally created in 1933 is the only one of its kind in the west It was established mainly at the request on the desert ranges who complained of decreasing lamb and calf crops loses in their herds and the need for providing more and more sup plemental feeds to carry the ani mals through the winter Its main functions are to study the desert shrub forage types that are chara cteristic of much of some time in the Honey Lake district Calif and he reports that hunters were flocking into that dis trict by the hundreds for the deer hunting season which opened on September 16 and closes October 15 Most of these campers according to Brooks appeared to be prepared for a camping trip of several days Livestock men in the were fearful of the results to cattle and were moying livestock to fields which they think will not be dis turbed by hunters Grazing Region Burned by ire LITCHIELD Cal Sept 17 Several acres of brush and grass grazing land was burned over sev eral days ago on the George Giraldo and Claude Noble ranches and just above the James Mapes property it was reported by the United States forest service 1 The blaze was soon under control when a truck load of forest service men arrived on the scene The fire was located by the attendant at the Schaffer Peak lookout above here ates one of the finest dairies in western Nevada said that he was experiencing considerable difficul ty with his herd and began treat ing with the Van Sant bacterian in Novermber of 1939 His results have been such that his calf crop once lower than 50 per cent is now around 90 per cent while his milk has increased and his feed consumption has decreased Thompson Andria and Curti dairymen of Truckee Meadows have likewise reported highly im proved calf crops' and increased milk production while Pimentel who operates the Peavine Dairy claims that his herd is now prac tically 10 Oper cent free of with the result that he longer losing valuable through segregation Bacterin Made in Reno With Nevada livestock men in creasing their demands for his bacterin Dr Van Sant recently opened a laboratory in Reno and with staff of four men is now manufacturing the bacterin locally adapting the product to local con ditions in preference to bacterin manufactured in his resno lab oratory Many livestock authorities are watching with interest the results obtained with the Van Sant method In that the treatment of prevalent livestock diseases with a dead bug bacterin is relatively new in this area several stockmen are making an extensive though cautious study of its results Desert Coolers Said Effective Mrs Mary Stilwell Buol of the Nevada Agricultural Extension Service reports that Nevada ranch ers find that desert coolers reduce the temperature from 10 to 35 de grees keeping butter solid and milk sweet Such a cooler consists of a frame with a porus cloth over it kept damp by wicks of the cloth which fold over into a pan of water on top of the cooler The cooler should be located in the shade where there is free circulation of air she states to promote efficiency Under these circumstances with dry air in mo tion a temperature as low as 50 degrees may be obtained on hot days One of the weeds that is a real headache not only in agricultural losses but in numerous other ways as well is the puncture vine (in cluded in the category of noxious weeds) In many parts of Ne vada it has become one of the most harmful and dreaded weeds in ex istence Charles Burke deputy state quarantine officer has spent tlje past eight years in the control of this vine and this year for the first time he states that he is get tinginfestations under control When fully grown a plant cov ers an area of 12 feet and pro duces approximately 3000000 burs which will puncture an au tomible tire more than a nail Puncture vine which has long vine arms that reach out in all directions like an octupus has been found in various parts of Reno and Sparks by Burke who states that they are often trans ported from state to state by rail roads trucks and cars As early as 1929 the state high way commission of California spent $15985555 in controlling the vine and has probably spent con siderably more during this past year Late figures are not avail able In many cases these weeds have lowered the value of land from $25 an acre down to $18 many farms when appraised if found to be in fested badly with puncture vine are almost worthless eral loan will not be on such property Puncture vine can carried by various crops that come in contact with it In many of the districts under control shipments of potential carriers are inspect ed before delivery is permitted Rejections of alfalfa and other hay melons grain cotton seed milo maize nursery stock and canta loupe seed have been recorded The barefoot boy is almost un known in sections where the vine is prevalent Injuries to the feet often prove fatal from infection The burs are the shape of a mal tese cross but have five arms in stead of four There are 10 spikes on each bur Cino rxf iha H'nref them is that if an animal should ranges to any appreciable extent eat one of the burs which is not after the prolonged dry summer uncommon the prongs will cause such a soreness that they can no longer walk Instances where both sheep and cattlehad eaten them and had their stomach linings punctured have been found Horses have had their mouths so full of that they could no longer chew their food Milk cows have been reported by dairymen to fall off materially in milk flow when first fed infest ed hay Control of the weed is well un der way Burke states but in some parts of southern Nevada property owners have become aged in attempting to natural enemy that given up their land At the present time control is being carried on by observing the affected land When a plant is found it is uprooted In extreme cases large fire torches are used but this usually on road sides Sometimes chemicals are used Mr Burke has kept a chart throughout the years showing the results of his inspections and clear ance of the infested places in the county At the present time there are about 170 infestations in the county mostly in Reno and Sparks Alt those who find such an infes tation are asked to report it im mediately to Burke state depart ment of agriculture Reno The weeds are annuals but their seeds sprout the following spring Burke made 1584 visits to infest ed location last year and an esti mated 21280 plants were found and destroyed he reports CARSON CITY Sept 17 (Spe cial) Harry Rose manager of Bi jou Park club Lake Tahoe was host Saturday evening to a large group of business representatives and sportsmen from Sacramento Placerville Reno Lake Tahoe and Carson City One of the principal subjects con sidered was the necessity of snow removal from 50 Lincoln highway during the coming win ter months This project is considered im portant because new road construc tion costing about a quarter of a million dollars is reported held in check pending decisions relative to opening 50 for winter sports LARGEST PURCHASER The United States is now the largest purchaser of South Ameri can wool SUSANVILLE Sept 17 (Spe cial) Corn growing demonstra tions here during the current week indicated that the rocky sagebrush lands of portions of Lassen county breaking into the Nevada boundaries may yet be in valuable to stock raisers of the two areas in supplying an abund ance of silage food Glenn Blickenstaff six year 4 Club member under the direction of Ralston Crew of this city recently planted 14 varieties of early maturing field corn the seed coming from the University of Minnesota The youth planted the com to three acres of open unirrigated lands It had varying maturing dates of from 95 to 120 days rom a measured row of 50 feet Crew making the test discovered the corn produced a little more than 10 tons of green silage to the acre Extension services from the Uni versities of California Minnesota and Wisconsin have asked for complete reports of this particu lar demonstration Some of the same seed planted on lands avail able to irrigation produced 21 tons of green silage to the acre accord ing to Crew 1940 Wool Clips Set at High Mark The quantity of wool shorn or to be shorn in the United States in 1940 is estimated by the Depart ment of Agriculture at 388692000 pounds the largest United States production on record This is 11 000000 pounds or three per cent more than the weight of wool shorn in 1939 and about eight per cent above the 10 year (1929 38) aver age The estimated number of sheep shorn or to be shown this year is 48414000 about 1000000 head or two per cent larger than in 1939 according to the National Wool Clip The average weight per fleece is estimated at 803 pounds this year compared with 796 pounds last year This 11000000 pounds in crease in weight for 1940 is to be derived mostly from Texas more than 6000000 pounds Heavy Rain alls In Tahoe Region TAHOE CITY Calif Sept 17 The level of Lake Ta hoe on Monday September 16 was 622698 feet with five gates open at the Truckee River dam outlet and 392 the lake Highest during the grees and lowest was 41 degrees Rain fell heavily Monday noon in scattered showers By MILTON MAPES With disease prevalent among the cattle herds of Nevada numerous livestock men of west ern Nevada are at present com bating the disorder through in oculation with a bacterin made from infected cattle This method of combating diseases most com mon in cattle especially in dairy herds Is said to have proved highly successful in the central valley regions of California for a number of years ranchers began using the relatively new bacterin on a wide scale for the first time eight months ago and are report ing highly satisfactory results According to a recent report of the United States department of agriculture bureau of animal in dustry cattle in more than half the State of Nevada show an in fection of disease exceed ing 15 per cent Most of Washoe county cattle proved to have ap proximately 10 per cent infection while the disease is less prevalent in the southern counties and more pronounced in the northern coun ties 'Nevada as a whole has the widest area in the west with this infection a map recently issued by the bureau reveals As one means of confining the spread of disease the fed eral government has for some time conducted a segregation pro gram in cooperation with cattle raisers Under this program herds are tested at regular Intervals and cattle found to be infected are taken from the herd and dis posed of At one time the gov ernment was paying the livestock men a compensation of $25 a head to offset partially the loss incur red and although compensation is no longer being paid the program of segregation is still being carried out Vaccina Experimentation As early as 1911 efforts were made to eradicate and prevent disease through vaccina tion Dr John Mohler and Dr Ira Traum identified through their work on livestock diseases began experimenting with vaccine for disease at that time employing the living microbe as their principle medium Ex perimentation with the toxin has continued since that time though it is conceded that the experiments have not been in progress a suffi cient length of time to indicate whether lifetime immunity or even lifetime Increased resistance is obtained according to Dr Duckworth chief of the division of animal husbandry of the Cali fornia department of agriculture in an article written for the West ern Livestock Journal Dr Van Sant Dr Van Sant of resno Calif started experimenting with the dead microbe while in the employ of the former Miller Lux Company of California in the early About eight years ago he established a laboratory for the perfection of his theory and during the past six years has been treating livestock extensively in California with results permanent nature that have termed highly satisfactory also introduced a toxoid to bat botulism Comes to Nevada In October of 1939 a group of local livestock and dairymen got in touch with Dy Van Sant and invited him to come to Nevada and discuss with them his meth ods of combating disease and other prevalent disorders He explained his theory and a dem onstration was arranged The results of his demonstration were such as to induce several cattle men of western Nevada to aban don the segregation plan and to treat their herds with the Van Sant bacterin Although the Van Sant method of treatment has been in effect locally for but eight or nine months the results reported by the various cattlemen using the bacterin are such that its use is becoming widespread Senator William Dressier and rank Settlemeyer of Minden red Settlemeyer of Smith Valley Senator Ira Winters of Carson Ralph aLttin Churchill county Pete Tompsen Jr Andria George Curti and Tony Pimentel of Washoe county are among the cattle raisers and dairymen in this section of the state who are using the Van Sant method with cood results In commenting on the results he a ntit ainPfl thrnnerh the use of the bacterin Senator Dressiersaid that before employing it on his purebred he made a trip to California and interviewed a number of cattlemen in the cen tral valley area who had been using it for the past few years Receiving favorable reports he re turned to Nevada and had a lim ited number of his purebred cattle treated on an experimental basis That was several months ago To day he is using the bacterin ex tensively rank Settlemeyer who oper Hunting Honors Won by Youth One of the more recent farmers of Nevada are Mr and Mrs Ray Travis formerly of southern Cali fornia and now in Churchill coun ty not far from allon They are operating the 170 acres of land on the old Cochran ranch owned by the California Lands Inc It consists mostly of alfalfa that has been sewed from one to 10 years Mr and Mrs Travis who have been in Nevada for th? past year report that they like it very much Travis reports that the old alfalfa is in need of re seeding but the more recently planted is doing well In addition about 30 acres of the farm has been in wheat and Sudan grass 80 acres of alfalfa and the remaining pasture There are 17 Holstein and Jersey cows on the place Work of eradicating the noxious weed called white top is progress ing rapndly according to a recent renort bv Dr Rosenfels as sitant physiologist of the United I of stockmen wintering States bureau of plant industry when he gave an account of his recent observations on the New lands project allon As indicated by the report a more effective way of eradicating this noxious weed is less frequent cultivation than is usually prac ticed together with regular irri gation The tests that Dr Rosen fels has made are not complete and conclusions are purley tenta tive the article pointed out He stated however that it may be possible to destroy white top as speedily with five to 10 cultiva tions a season as with a greater number "By cultivation is
