White Pine county had some very significant developments during the year 1956 One of them was a change in loading methods at the Liberty Pit another was the rapid develop ment of the Veteran Pit and a third was the comprehen sive modernization program at the lime quarry near McGill Development and mining at newest pit Veteran proceeded without interruption When completed the pit will be nearly 2500 feet long 1500 feet wide and 800 feet deep at its deepest point At the present time approxi mately three tons of waste are being removed for each ton of ore made available to the shov els and development work has reached the 7000 foot elevation The highest elevation at the rim is feet Possible Record On September 5 a possible rec ord for waste removal in a 24 hour period by a 6 yard shovel was made as a total of 41872 tons of waste were removed in a 24 hour period and 14696 tons in one 8 Plour shift or more than 35 years lime stone used in the company smel ter was blasted from a 250 foot face At the present time blast ing is from 13 face areas but with a modernization program now under way quarry mining will be changed to the more con ventional open pit bench method Blasting will be done on a large scale but not as frequently and a self propelled drill will be used to provide a set pattern of holes in order to blast a larger quan tity of limestone of usable size New Method In the new method of opera tion a tractor excavator loads broken limestone into a truck which dumps it into a bin at a new crusher being installed as part of the modernization pro gram In the past the larger pieces of limestone were broken by hand but the new installation provides for the lime rock to be crushed by a jaw crusher taken by a conveyor belt to a double deck vibrating screen where three products will be made viz: oversize for return crusher feed middlings for road aggregate and undersizes for smelter flux Undeground operations were centered in the Minnesota Hi ore body which lies above and to the south of the Deep Ruth ore body and has to be mined prior to the initiation of mining of the Deep Ruth as it is within the Deep Ruth ore projected cave area It is planned to ex haust the Minnesota Hi ore body in 1957 after which mining of the Deep Ruth ore body will be initiated The Minnesota Hi ore body produced about 400000 tons of ore in 1956 and is expected to yield 1000000 tons in 1957 The ore to date has averaged about one per cent copper The Deep Ruth ore body is expected to produce 25000000 tons of ore containing about 400000000 pounds of copper IN 'BUS STOP' Of 1 e)
