Service Snow surveys have been completedby the Soil Con servation Service at a few key snow courses in Elko county In Owyhee and Humboldt River this was the second year of January 1 snow surveys Consequently' no normals have been established as yet for comparison Measurements made this year are in general below those made last year mis ume wirn tne exception of two snow courses on Jack Creek tributary to the south fork of the Owyhee River Indications are that winter storms have exhausted them selves on the west slope of the Independence Mountains and have not continued over the northern feeders of the Hum boldt River In the Snake River drainage on the Jarbidge River and Salmon alls Creek watersheds January 1 surveys are also below measurements made last but are better' than those of 1955 Warm rains early in Decem ber removed all low elevation snow leaving the soil mantle wet Snow surveyors report the ground beneath the mountain snow pack to be frozen Precipi tation at the Elko weather bur eau station for the months of October November and Decem ber totals 213 inches with nor mal for this period of 261 inches This can be interpreted as about 82 per cent of normal for the three month period In Elko county by January 1 about 40 per cent of the winter snow water should be on the mountain watersheds Computa tions show that only the upper and lower Jack Creek snow courses are near the 40 per cent figure Snow surveys will not be taken in the Ruby Mountains un til the first of ebruary Report rom Norden No snow surveys were taken in the Sierra Mountains but a report from Norden on the west ern slope indicates extremely poor conditions On January 1 there was one inch of snow on the ground A long record of measurements gives an average of 38 inches of snow on the ground Last year on January 1 99 inches were recorded The next three months must bring heavy snowfall throughout the state of Nevada or next irriga tion season will be marked as a dry one for farmers who do not Use reservoired water The Geological Survey reports for the month of Decem ber that stream discharges in western and northern Nevada continued above median due to excessive precipitation during median total ing 4030 acre feet Runoff dur ing December of the Humboldt River at Palisade Nev was 139 per cent of median and totaled 4870 acre feet In Nevada snow surveys are co ordinated by the Soil
