the wage of JdOCO employee of tho United States Steel Corporation will be cut on or about April 1 was the Unequivocal statement made today by a man who has Intimate sources of Information The decision to reduce wages at this early date was reached within the past few days at one of the dally conferences of the Steel magnates Meantime every effort will be made to conciliate the men who will suffer by the wage cut and thus forestall what would bo one of the greatest strikes that has over affected American Industries It was explained to the Eevenlng Worlds Informant that the Steel people have decided not to wait for Confrrws to decide on A reduction of the tariff on Steel as advised by Andrew Carnegie but to take the bull by tho horns before the national law makers have reached a decision That Is the heads of the Steel Trust will act on the foregone conclusion that the tariff will be shaved and shape their course accordingly Every hour even days delay In the adjusting of the affairs of such a vast corporation Is vitally Important wherefore the directors of the United States Steel Corporation have concluded that they cannot afford to wait for Congress to act It Is hoped thin It will not be necessary to cut wages all along the line For Instance the price of steel rails fZS a ton wlllnot be changed i consequently It possible that the men employed In tho mills where tied rails are made will not suffer a cut In wages This undoubtedly would raIse a howl among the workers In other mills whose output was affected by the cut In prices and whose wages were therefore reduced These matters will all be gone Into at great length and there will be many conferences with labor leader and committees appointed by the workers In tho various mills Just hOlT many of the steel workers are organized It unknown even to the Steel magnates themselves I Statements have been made to he ef1 fMt that only per cent of the employees of the United Stales Steel Corporation are really organized Into a union Labor men however say that such an estimate 1s ridiculous and predict that when the time comes for the organ ized steel workers to show their hand It will be found that a majority of tho IMOOOO of them have a pretty thorough organization Furthermore In view of the present crisis the labor leaders are getting busy i to solidify the entire lody of men Into i an organization that can exact status of the labor situation When It was first thought advisable to delay the cut In wages until May 1 the suggestion was offered that this further delay would only give the men more time In
