over the fighting but hopelessly outclassed Newberry Indians here today A crowd of 8000 was on hand Coach Doc Newton kept his veteran first string under wraps most of the afternoon but reserves completed the rout as the Birds rolled up 21 first downs to two for the Indians and 363 yards rushing against nine Using only a half dozen plays the Gamecocks smashed to their first touchdown within five minutes on a 64-yard drive added another a few minutes later racked up one each in the second and third and topped it off with three touchdowns in the final quarter Newberry never seriously victory over the Brooklyn Tigers play host to the Bears in a renewal of the oldest rivalry and a contest that may go a long way towards determining the 1944 titlist In the second battle the Cleveland Davis went over right guard for 10 for a first down on 16 Lewis picked up two and Davis added nine to the Spiders' five An offside penalty set the Blue Devils back to the 10 after which Davis lost three Lewis pass to Carver over the goal was just out of reach but Lewis behind good blocking picked up 10 yards and then Davis crashed over right tackle for the score kick was bad SCORE AGAIN The second quarter opened with Duke in possession of the ball on its own 48 and it required only one minute and 20 seconds to tally Clark cracked right tackle for seven moving to Richmond's 45 Clark then
