school au thorities Twelve members of the senior class and a like number of sophomores led the honor rolls of their respective classes The freshman class was third with six students placing high on the list and the junior class rated but four students on the top roll Three students at the high school made a straight standing dur ing the second six weeks period Those achieving this scholastic (UR) The state supreme court to day denied a motion by the Jake Katelman estate to dismiss an ap peal by Liberty Katelman of a Las Vegas district court order confirm ing sale of El Rancho Vegas stock by the irst National Bank ad ministrator The bank moved to dismiss the appeal because Mrs Katelman and her child had accepted monthly family allowance payments of $750 The bank contended that because the widow and child knew these payments came out of the proceeds of the stock sale they were pre cluded from appealing the order confirming the sale The court denied the motion on grounds the family allowance pay ments were charged against the en tire estate and not simply against the proceeds of the stock sale and that there was no waiver of the right of appeal The opinion was filed with Court meeting Monday evening at the home of Mrs George Henningsen in the valley when Mu was the timely topic taken by the hostess for an interesting pro gram The holiday atmosphere was emphasized by the lovely deco rations throughout the ooms and many Christmas memories were brought back by the roll call re sponses when members told of dolls they had had or had known about and several gave information and history of dolls Many Christmas customs were told of by Mrs Hen ningesen and the history of a group of carols was given with the beau tiful rendition of them given by records The members joined in the singing of Holi day refreshments were served at the close of the evening the trays attractive with red and green and a tiny candy cane as a favor Pres ent were Mesdames Baker following their December business meeting at the McElrath home Monday night Mrs Don Griffith chairman conducted the meeting at which tentative plans for a January home cooked food sale were discussed In place of a gift exchange eacn member contributed a sum toward purchase of a CARE package to be sent overseas The pro gram included specially recorded Christmas music and a recording by Loretta Young of "The Little Mrs Hinds and Mrs Elwin ait served as hostesses Candlelight and music as well as humor were part of the program for the annudl Christmas dinner party held jointly by members of the auxiliaries of Charles Beuhanon Post No 28 American Legion and Homer Dane Post No 958 Veterans of oreign Wars at riendly Hall in Wells Monday night The evening opened with a wel coming carol around the lighted Christmas tree by the entertain ment committee Twenty five auxiliary members were seated for dinner by candlelight which was followed by carol singing and a toy band skit to the music oj of the Wooden Mrs White Sr presented the Santa Claus act accompanying the gift exchange Mrs White Jr acted as organist for the caroling Members of the en tertainment committee and chorus were ycar old Hawthorne resident dropped dead shortly after one Authorities were sum moned by Connors on whose property Mr Becker was doing re pair work and who found Mr Becker unconscious Born in Missouri Mr Becker spent his early life in that state He served in the Army during World War I and following the war moved to California where he resided until 1929 when he came to Hawthorne He had made his home in this community since that time Mr Becker was employed in construction work when the naval depot was being built here in 1929 and 1930 and in later years engaged in private contract work doing hauling and selling wood Mr Becker never married and his only known surviving relative is a cousin Mrs Ernest Cragin of Las Vegas Users of Nevada Roads Unworried About Licenses HAWTHORNE Dec 17 (Spe cial) John Starbuck a resi dent of this community the past six years died early Sunday morn ing at the local hospital Mr Starbuck who authorities said had suffered from a heart af fliction was stricken at his home in Babbitt shortly after midnight and was rushed to the hospital where he died a short time later He was 65 years of age Mr Starbuck who was employed as a fireman in the boiler plant at the naval depot had worked a reg ular shift on Sunday and appar ently was feeling well at the time he left the job fellow workers said Bom in Bristol Tenn on May 21 1888 Mr Starbuck lived in North Dakota for many years mov ing from there to Hawthorne in 1947 He had been employed at the naval depot most of the time since then and had also done some mining in this area He is survived by his widow Mrs Alma Jane Starbuck who was vis iting in North Dakota at the time of his death and also a sister liv ing in Washbum uneral services and burial will be in Bismarck Inti Biz Mach Int Harv Int decorations carrying out the Christmas theme with silver candelabra holding white taper? and against a background of holiday greens on the white embroidered cloth the effect was very lovely A business Roll call responses were stories of other Christmases and many clever and unusual tales were told Aliss Ruth elten who returned at the weekend from Chi cago where she accompanied the 4 winners from this county to the 4 Congress told of the trip and of the meetings This is Aliss second trip with the rep resentatives from here and she emphasized how much more de manding are the tests and re quirements now than a few years ago Airs Archie Safley sang two solos "Jesu and es pecially dedicated to Airs Dress hospitable and lovely home This The gifts around the gaily decorated tree were chosen by each guest and then as Aliss elten played the piano each one passed her gift to the right until the music stopped Just when one believed the gift to be finally hers the music started again with gold and silver angels on red angel hair and the red napkins made an interesting contrast There was a small Christmas tree and the Nativity Scene backed by greens and silver candelabra with red candles created a lovely Christmas atmosphere Bridge was the diversion and prize awards went to Airs Jerry Neddenriep Airs Henry Rosenbrock and Airs Bacon Alembers and guests en joying this lovely ters requested the city councilmen at the last regular meeting to place a section of city owned land on sale According to their request the El ko realtors wish to purchase the land for a new subdivision to the city The area requested by Air Alartin and Air Walters extendi between Seventh and Eighth Streets north to the present cemetery and near the Indian colony Alembers of the council have taken the requests under consideration In connection with a possible sale of the land Councilman Karl Keppler stated that the city must look forward to the time when the present cemetery would be indade quate and therefore carefully con sider any sale which might make the expansion of this facility diffi cult In addition to the request for land made by the Elko realtors Msgr William Devlin and night after an ill ness of several months Mr Zadow was bom October 18 1880 at Hamilton the "son of Emma and Louis Zadow He married Harriett Oldfield Sep tember 17 1913 in Ely He came to Ely in 1902 to work for the Graham Mercantile Co which later became the Campgon Com mercial Co for which he was man ager of the grocery department Mr Zadow bought the grocery and hardware departments in 1927 and the busines has been known as the Zadow Commercial Co since He was a member of Ely IOO Lodge and served as its treasurer for 30 years He was a charter member of Ely Rebekah Lodge No 27 and Was a member of
