met with Tate Wil liams of the Reno Retail Merch ants Association to discuss a pro posed upward revision in the cost of general business licenses Mr Williams conferred before the meeting with members of his organization Both business and gambling li censes will have to be overhauled the city has indicated if Reno is to get the additional income officials believe is necessary to maintain es sential municipal services and handle the storm sewer bond issue which was passed this year The ordinance Governing the cost of general business licenses will not be put into effect before July 1 Gambling licenses handled qn a calendar year basis will probably be raised in an ordinance to go into effect January 1 Meetings have already been held with Reno" gambling house oper ators the majority oTwhom City Manager Thomas Hilberg reported yesterday are not opposed to a proposed raise' mlicense fees Gaming ee Boosts Mr Hilberg said he could not re lease the proposed increases in gambling license fees at this time He said however that the main increase will come in licenses for roulette craps and tables Smaller increases will be felt in licenses for race horse keno poker pan bingo racing wire race horse service chuck a luck sports pool and faro operators There is no an ticipated increase for slot machines All general business licenses which are issued on a sliding scale according to gross income will probably cost a small amount more after the beginning of the fiscal year Mr Hilberg said the city will probably raise the maximum cost of a license from its present level to $500 Currently all business grossing over $180000 a year pay an additional $30 for each $50000 gross until the $340 limit has been reached Mr Hilberg said the increase pro posals have been received favor ably because are not trying to go overboard We are trying to talk from a realistic $112000 Deficit Looms Because the city has not been able to realize enough money from its tax rate it faces a deficit of about $112000 this year is to raise half from gambling fees and half creased business license The alternative to raising the fees Mr Hilberg indicated would be a cut back of essential city serv ices or personnel Presently business license fees range from a minimum of $30 to $340 maximum Licenses from roulette craps and range from $600 a table where one to three tables are in opera tion to $900 a table where more than 20 are in operation Keno bingo and race wire oper ators pay $1000 for their licenses Chuck a luck and faro licenses are $200 sports pools $100 and race horse services $340 The lowest gambling licenses are for poker and pan which cost $60 a table in city fees Attending session were Mayor rancis Smith Mr Hilberg Councilman Marshall Guisti and Charles Cowen and Mr Williams
