out their 1953 foot ball slate with a perfect 5 0 record as they decisively defeated the Winnemucca Buckaroos 33 13 on the Manogue field here yesterday The put the pressure on the Yerington Lions the only other team in competition with a chance to tie the Miners The Lions sport a 4 0 record for season play and wind up their schedule against the Carson City Senators this afternoon in the big Admission Day game at Car son A win by the Lions today would throw the division lead into a two way tie and call for a playoff between Yerington and Manogue A Lion loss or tie today would give the Miners clear claim to the champion ship Yesterday's game started like a day at the races with four touch downs tallied in as many minutes of the opening quarter Manogue spurted to the initial score in the first minute of play The Miners had kicked off to the Buckaroos and had bottled the re turn up on the Winnemucca 15 A quick kick on first down by Winne mucca was downed on the Buck aroo 31 where Manogue took over with a first and 10 Three running plays moved the ball to the 20 Manogue halfback Louis Oar went off tackle for two yards and on the next play quarterback rank Gar cia skirted the end for 18 yards and the score A pass for the ex tra point from Garcia to end Don Moses was good and it was 7 0 for the Miners Tobin to Gonzalez Manogue kicked to the Buck aroos again A penalty gave Win nemucca a first and 10 on the Manogue 48 but the Humboldt club move in three plays On fourth and 10 the slinging quarterback Jerry Tobin pulled a surprise pass play that caught the Miner defense flat footed Halfback Al Gonzalez gath ered the ball in and loped 48 yards for the score The same combina Tobin to Gonzalez clicked again for the extra point and it was 7 7 with only a little more than I two minutes gone The Miners roared back the next time they got the ball Oar ran the kickoff back to the Manogue 47 On the next play fullback Dave Lindsay went for 10 and a first down to the Winnemucca 43 Gar cia scampered around the end again and this time it was good yards and another TD plunged for the extra point was 14 7 for the Miners Gonzalez Goes 80 Undaunted by the two quick Ma nogue touchdowns the Buckaroos took the next kick and with Tobin handling the ball on a slick reverse to Gonzalez the latter galloped for 80 yards and made it 14 13 The try for the extra point was no good and the one point was as close as Win nemucca got for the rest of the game The furious pace of the opening minutes slowed for the rest of the first period Manogue worked the ball to the at half time gave up one touchdown in the third period and coasted to the vic tory allon a Nevada di vision football team entered the game a heavy favorite over the division Douglas team coached by rank Kelly 1 Lone TD for the host Tigers came in the third quarter With allon reserves in the game Doug las began to march and set up a first down on the Wave 30 yard 1 line The allon starters came a large rooting section of Reno students and a small con tingent of townspeople It brought record to 3 3 as the home schedule closed out Windup wall be Nov 11 at Las Vegas against the undefeated Wildcats for the 1953 Nevada title A Reno team much improved in line play and tackling beat off Chico's heavy ground attack and countered with an accurate aerial weapon which decided the game Penalties hit the Huskies and can celled three extra touchdown runs all by Ken ujii Striegel Standout Chico relied on power plays built on the short punt formation mass ing interference for plunges or end runs by a tall 186 pound fullback Bob Barram a re converted guard at halfback Tom Spring and slip pery Ron Chrisco rangy left half Standout of the Panthers and one of the best high school linemen seen in this region in a long while was the field leader Bill Striegel 205 pbund tackle This busy fellow called the offensive plays and gave defensive signals and his blocking opened some gaping holes pass Len Mardian to Ken ujii who dodged behind a wave of blockers and went all the way to complete a 58 yarder But Reno was called on clipping and the ball was moved back to the 41 Undaunted they worked the same tvne play on the next try and again It went all the and without a whistle Mardian bounded into the air and whirled for a jump pass but saw his receiver blocked He came down and faked a run then spotted ujii and let fly The vet eran halfback nailed the ball around the 50 yard line and was accom panied by a convoy of blockers to the goal line George con version kick try was low and it was 6 0 Reno Before the quarter ended a slick trap play sent ujii rocketing up the middle all of 59 yards to the goal line but again a penalty nulli fied this TD try Early in the second quarter Reno got as deep as Chico's 31 yard line before being held for downs Chico then had a chance recovering a Reno fumble on the Huskies' 29 but get more than six yards in four tries It was 6 0 at halftime The luckless ujii had another long run called back early in the third period Howard Seeman in tercepted a Chico pass around 30 yard line zig zagged back to midfield where he later ailed to ujii who raced
