I i 1 THE WORLD TUESDAY EVENING OCTOBER 21 1902 If 1 1DQOSONS MAKE BOW AS STARS Kate Carew Says There Is aGlow of Domesticity About VAn American Invasion at the Bijou Theatre WRTI HARVEYS TRIUMPH tVoung English Actor Makes Remark able Impression In The Only Way at Herald Square Theatre I Favorite Comedy at the Garrick I 4 A mild and beneflcrnt glow of dome tie sentiment radiated from the since I of the Bllou Theatre last nIght when Mr Oodeon and Miss Annie Irlsli mada their first appearance In New York ai mauled costars It was touching One pictured the long years of waItIng of travelling on parate routes of lonely breakfasts ot unsewed buttons and tindamed SOCKS and th thousand discomforts of matrimonIal apartness At least that was the way I pictured It until I remembered having seen Mi Dodson and illss Irish plavlng subordinate parts In tho name company last Isalon and then I wasnt so sure about the separation feature of It But theta remain that the triumph of domesticity was the prevailing Influence at the first performance of An American Invasion Form part I wish there were a law to keep the private affairs of actors and actresses out of the newspapers Try 1 will to lose myself In the play the things I have heard and read about the performers will not down That the coy Ineenuo was Involved In thatahem that soandso affair that the naughty Adventurers has recently given a new organ to her pet church that the fn tt min Is an Earl or that the housemaid ln broken off her engagement to the heavy father these scraps of unncces sary Information rise un and clamor tttvfr mind the play just attend to us we are Popular Personalities and you shall not forgot us And so when In the last act Mr Oodson won his buxom enchantress well one pictured two pairs of slippers It waiting at home and a hot supper 1 and a hearttoheart curtain talk about the niceness of the audience and the cheery figures In tho bosofflce report Dialogue I Aimless 3 But Its just as well to have tliat sort of thing to distract you when you iceMAn American Invasion for Is a weak and foolish concoction ln which the characters overhear one anothers asides and wander on and off the stage without any reasonable motive but merely at the authors sweet will the same beIng SInr Madeleine IMiittte Jlylay When a lady has finished her eenc for Instance and It Is time to get her off the stage she Is made to remark Well I dont see my samples In this room so I guess Ill go and look tor them In the llbraty and off aha COM One character Is an American the rest are alleged tq be Kngllshand If they used the language of tho dialogue In England they would need an Interpreter I guess Ive lost my pull says a British cDloml In his best London snean New London Connaccent There are papers In An American InvMlpn Important papers Youd never guess It I know but they are lost Lost papers what do you think of that as a motive for a play Theres a terrible deal of manoeuvring over those lost papers but I must confess I 4 that 1 was not very Interested In them and did not cure much whether they wire recovered nr not Dinner titian III Part Mr Dodson cloys the American and he Is very American Indeed The part does not begin to give him an opening or his talents but such as It Is he makes more oul of It than might have been expected His dry humor clear I enunciation anl big reserve of quiet I force and finish sounds a little furniture polish but never mindare fairly ChIng for exercise In a part that would give them something to do lllss Annie Irish Is best known toN I York In gontle widow parts to which her modest gifts and bland Der aonalltv suit her In An American Invasion she Is again a widow hut Is required to be a very flirtatious one who breaks hearts and steals papers and goes In for repartee In spite or which Miss Irish Is a gentle widow stili Her repartee doesnt tool you her kittenish moments make you feel as you would If you surprised your clergyman playing hopscotch and when she steals 1 the papers you refuse to believe your swn eyes Only when she appears In bs last act In a stunning hospital nurse enlform will you acknowledge that Miss Jrlah Is herself There are numerous other characters wry well played for the most part and acme pretty stage settings I KATE CAREW etKEoNLvW4Y I Last night a young English actor Virtually unknown to America atepped I Into Broadway Today his footfall echoes with the ring of a newfound 1 fame I In a play placed In the doubtful cate gory Martin Harvey at the Herald gjjujjo Theatre achieved the most memorable success of tho season As Sydney Carton In The Only Way the Freeman Wills dramatic verslon of Dickenss A Tale of Two Cities he played with ouch fine effect that Bravosl were thouted at him by people not usually chard with being emotional and the curtain was raised again and again In answer to enthusiastic demand not only during the act Intervals but at the close of the Play It may honestly be said that Mr Harvey by the force aid likewise by the gentle charm of hU acting flirty swept the house I Harveys Is a new Oydney arton Ho played the part of the unselfish laet lowetl In an entirely sympathetic Lsjjrlt His conception differs from plenry Millers that he makes It more fetadljr more human from Edward Mor en In the osnse it Is less theatric less melancholy I tg makes Cfjtou aa St sfcoulfl JLtf THEATRICAL STARS WHO APPEAR I IN THE NEW PLAYS ON BROADWAY ANNIE IRISH ben fellow of mooJi with occasional Kllmpaos of the gayety which of necessity lies ut the bottom of such souls This Is reflect In a smile wonderfully winning lighting with Aprillike vagary a face vividly expressive and by eyes bespeaking Ineffable earning for the unattainable Mr harvey appenln to both men and women but more especially to women In the earlier scenes Mr Harvey rt veoled to the life the reckless drink enslaved fatalist Husltlncrs of voice natural at this stage betrayed later on a hoarseness which was perhaps a penalty of too arduou rehearsal But there was ever sympathetic music In the tones Doubt that the actor might be unequal to the strenuous demands ot the play was dispelled by Mr harvey handling of the stirring trial scene where Carton pleads before the ragtag tribunal for the life of Charles Darnay He was powerful without effort and I admirable In the flashing charlatanllke nhrendnea with which Carton plays upon the sympathies of the Inflamed revolutionIst In the parting scene with Lucy Manette there was a deep underlying pathos and an effective bit of detail In the picking to pieces of a lower which lay upon the table So held by the spell of Mr Harxeys act lug was the audience at this point that ho only sound other than his voice was the distant clanging of a carbell In tho street Tensely drawn and mutely appealing was the portraiture of the silently lovIng and silentlysuffering Mimi of lifts da Buys who It may be Interesting to add ia the wife of Mr Harvey veyAnother Another finelyplayed part was the Dr Manette of Mr Fred Wright sr a veteran whose art has a mellowness which entitles It to be classed with that Of Sir Jefferson Mr Stoddard and the ateMr Couldock Mia EXCELLENCY TUB GOVERNOR The renewal of His Excellency the Governor at the GarrIck last night showed plainly that the Marshall comedy which was received with such favor two seasons ago still retains its hold on the public There were many firstnighters In the crowded house to see Miss Jeaale Mlllward as Btella do Oex and they were lavish In their applause not only for her but for Edwin Stevens as the Governor Thompson as the Right Hon Henry Carlton and Leo Dltrlohsteln as Bayer stuck the private secretary Mr DIt rlchsteln was especially amusing as the droll secretary The Earl of Rosrlyn was cast as Capt Charles Carew a role which he created He was at ease In the part and proved himself a Capable actor The company as a whole was acceptable but here and there were some amateurish spots as for Instance Miss Beatrice Irwin as Ethel Carlton The company which has been put together by Mr Frohman for the road will only be at the Garrlek two weeks but If last nights demonstrations of approval may be taken as a criterion I they will play to crowded houses during the brief engagement At the close of the second act the entire company was recalled five times BROADWAY DILLS Ethel Barrymore began her third week at the Savoy In Carrots and A Country MouseJohn Drew repeated The Mummy and the Humming Bird at the EmplreTho Two Schools again enlivened the Madison SquareAUca Fischer In Mrs Jack and reatore and his band entertained patrons of the VlctorlaThe Rogers Brothers In Harvard began the last week but one of the run at tho Knicker bocker Brandon Tynan Inaugurated his farewell week In Robert Emmet at the Fourteenth Street Theatre Henrietta Crosman again delighted READY START IAn Athletic Event You want everybody wants brain and muscle wind and largely a matter of choice with any one tor proper living and proper food will bring the prize An athlete In Chicago tells of the good results he obtained from proper food ho says Lost spring I began to train hard to become an athlete In track events and to grow stronger I now know that what strength and victories I have secured are due to the use of Grapu Nuts When in training for an athletic meet I would just live on GrapeNuts alone for three days before tho event was to come off During this time I have won six championship races out of two athletic meets In a 300yard run my time was 35 seconds and In the 75 yard dash the time was 9 seconds both being a good record drapeNuts has given me a stronger mind and also bodily strength which no other food could have done In so short a time I
