Improvement Of Wildlife Is Adopted By Smith Valley Soil District 7)cr tyon heed a TRUSS COME IN ond let our spe cialist fit you perfectly Bsnsmgffgs A cooperative wildlife improvement program was adopted by the Smitlf Valley soil conservation district super visors at a recent meeting It will enable farmers within the districts to call on Nevada wildlife technicians to assist them in developing farm fish ponds upland game feed and habitat or marsh improvement Joe Greenley resident wildlife conservation officer told the group that the Nevada ish and Wildlife Commission will be extremely interested in such a program The commission feels that much can be done to improve wildlife conditions by working through agencies of local govern ment such as the soil conservation districts Such programs have been very successful in other states such as Idaho and have a definite place in areas like Smith Valley where such a heavy hunting load must be supported The establishment of winter cover and feed sources in the form of wind breaks and wood lots can do much to assist game birds such as pheasant or quail in surviving winter conditions This sort of farm game management will also fit into a pattern of efficient land use Mr Greenley also pointed out Paul Scheffer regional biologist Soil Conservation Service de scribed how such programs have been organized in Idaho with excel lent results He went on to explain how the district will have a work ing agreement with the state ish and Wildlife Commission whereby technical assistance will be furn ished through the district to any farmer wishes to establish wildlife projects such as farm fish ponds or habitat plantings These technicians will help the farmer to locate the ideal areas for ponds or cover plantings and assist in the development and maintenance of such projects When available forage shrubs or fish will be furn ished as planting stock The program met the approval of the board of supervisors ho exe cuted the agreement with the wild life commission to furnish assist ance Jack Rice chairman of the board expressed the hope that the ranchers would cooperate in the program as much as possible be cause if it proves successful in Smith Valley the wildlife commis sion hopes to use the system in other applicable areas Anyone who would possibly be in terested in participating in the pro gram is urged to contact either a member of the Smith Valley board of supervisors Mr Greenley or a Soil Conservation technician Carson Marine 4 IHII rt Rj i i 2 Rz 4sk sT Second Lt John Ross son of Mr and Mrs John
