McCarran of Nevada are working to bring about an early agreement between summer residents on Lake Tahoe and drought stnicken Nevada, so that water can be pumped from the lake for irrigation and relief purposes.

After conferring with interior department and emergency relief officials until late last night, Gov- ernor Griswold is not optimistic over prospects of reaching an im- I mediate agreement. Can Order Pumping: He said a telegram sent Governor Merriam of California asking for his intercession has not ibeen answered and that his talks with Belief Administrator Hopkins might prove fruitless unless home owners on the California side of the lake will agree to permit the pumping of water with few, if any, restrictions. The governor did insist, however, that in his opinion federal officials can order the pumping of water with or without the consent of California residents. "iegal Technicalities" "I have talked with all interested officials in Washington," he said, "and my reaction has that the only'Uar iRrtKe'lmmediate settlement of the issues involved are legal technicalities. If the federal government thinks it desirable to pump immediately, it can order pumping operations to start at once, regardless of what property owners on the lake think about it." It is understood Governor Merriam has telegraphed Administrator Hopkins that interested parties of Nevada will agree with California residents on the shores of Lake Tahoe to 'permit water pumping if their riparian and upstream storage rights are protected.

Seeks Another Meeting 1 In commenting on this phase of the controversy, Senator McCarran said prospects of an early agreement do not "look, too bright" and in anticipation of failure he has wired many parties interested in the Truckee-Carson irrigation and conservation districts and Washoe county officials requesting them to meet with riparian owners of Lake Tahoe in an effort to reach some sort of a satisfactory agreement. The senator, who has remained at his Capitol office for the express purpose of rendering all the aid he can to bring the maximum relief to his constituents, is prepared to fly to iReno if those interested in pumping water from the lake think his presence in Nevada is essential. U. S. Approval "Every major department in Washington, which has an interest in Lake Tahoe or Truckee river navigation, water conservation, or relief with which I have discussed the matter," he said, "has expressed approval of the immediate pumping of water from the lake if it will relieve drought conditions.

"Of course, I realize that residents on the California side ofr the lake have rights which must be respected, tout it seems to me sacrifices could be made on both sides in order to meet such an emergency as the drought has brought about." LONDON, June her pretty nose to illustrate a point, Lady Cavendish threw a staid English courtroom into hysterics today during the divorce suit of Edward F. James against Tillv Losch, dancer. Lady Cavendish, the former Adele Astaire, herself a prominent dancer on Broadway, was not seeking to deride any one in the room, but made the gesture to support Miss Losch's denials of an adultery charge in James' suit.

She was being questioned about how Tilly acted while riding in a taxicab in New York with prince Serge Obolensky--a ride mentioned in the suit as having been marked by an extraordinary amount of kissing between the prince and the dancer. Lady Cavendish replied that Miss Losch "made faces" at the prince as the cab proceeded through Manhattan thoroughfares. She said she knew, because she was in another cab running side by side or just behind the one in which the couple were riding. Par from kissing the prince in that cab Lady Cavendish said Tilly made faces at him, and showed what she meant by placing her thumbs to a small nose and wriggling her fingers at a surprised solicitor. Berksan, who formerly lived in Pvome, contacted Count Volpi, exhibition president, and saw Antonio Marami, secretary- general of the exhibition, before the opening. Missing Wife of Panama Steamship Official Tells Story EL PASO, June -Authorities who listened to a woman's story of being kidnaped, drugged and forced to masquerade as a man were convinced tonight that the victim of the strange plot was Mrs. Sybil Fidanque, society leader of San Jose. Calif. "I am positive that this is Mrs. Fidanque," Alex Street, investigator for the federal department of justice, said.
