Lovelock area known as state By DAVE SANORD By 1919 the length and breadth of Huiflboldt County complicated by a power struggle between the county seat of Winnemucca to the north and Lovelock to the south had created the need for a change It was during that year that the southern part of Humboldt County became Pershing County Prior to both Nevada statehood and the formation of Humboldt County the area now encompassed by Per shing County was first a possession of Spain and later a part of the New Mexico Territory The county seat of Lovelock located on the leading edge of the infamous Mile quickly became a major stopping point for emigrants traveling along the California Trail The fertile lands in the surrounding area served from the start to make Lovelock nicknamed the Valley of one of the major le Valley' agricultural producing areas in the state Currently Pershing County depends for the most part on its mining and agriculture The Eagle Picher Industries diatomatious earth mill and the McDougal Livestock Industries cattle feed mill operation both located near Lovelock are major contributors to the Pershing County economy Rye Patch Reservoir to the north offers boating water skiing and fishing and attracts several hundred visitors 'a day during the summer months The population has remained pretty much constant over the past few years according to Pershing County Clerk Gladys Nelson She said the future of Pershing County looks fairly static with the exception of sewer and water im provements within Lovelock that will result hopefully in some growth within the county Citynewspaperman named DR Sessions referred to the Elko area as weary wastes of the great and elusive Little did Sessions realize that when the smoke Cleared away in the battle for the university that same Northeastern Nevada outpost would come away the winner Even more improbable was the final choice as first principal of the school that same DR Sessions Those early days in 1874 marked the beginning of rt a university system which has grown in 102 years to two four year campuses three community college branches and research divisions all serving thousands of students But when the University of Nevada Preparatory School opened its doors to seven students in a two story red brick building in Elko it was little more than a high school Sessions still had a huge task as one man faculty teacher adviser and principal But 11 years later the growth reached the expected 100 or more students The Elko experiment never had a chance to get beyond 35 students as the university was moved to Reno in n1886 or another year the high school studies con tinued but in 1887 college level courses were finally offered Ohio educator Leroy Brown arrived to take the fledgling reins as its first president His tenure as head administrator was a stormy one and set a pattern for the equally stormy regimes of half of the later presidents Both Brown and his successor Stephen Jones resigned under pressure in the turmoil of the University of early growing pains But stability marked the term of the next On Elko Campus irst of president served as one man faculty resident Joseph Stubbs who put the school on the ack to true university status by hiring talented faculty and wooing donors to make major grants and gifts to the University of Nevada 20 year term was followed by another 20 year stay by Walter Clark under whose ad ministration the student enrollment tripled He came in 1918 and by his own admission saw the university pretty much mark time during his 20 years But the generous donations of Clarence Mackay son of Comstock mining pioneer John Mackay helped build new facilities during the Clark years After Clark resigned in 1938 five different presidents followed for the next 15 years of un certainty and difficulty amid funding cutbacks during World War II and the sudden enrollment boom after the war The 1950s saw increased growth due to more tax money from rapidly mounting The university and its faculty were ttention from scholars outside the state for des in geology mining agriculture and other university disciplines During that decade the Max oundation funded construction projects on the Reno campus and provided millions of dollars for scholarships and other educational projects While changes loomed in Northern Nevada a' seed sprouted down south in a high school basement as Nevada Southern University was started in 1951 It was considered an extension school and was called the Southern Regional Division but by 1957 the first building was built barely a mile and a half from the glittery Las Vegas Strip In 1963 it began granting college degrees and in 1965 the school officially became Nevada Southern University Despite a fierce rivalry north and south were destined to join together just three years later when the university board of regents reorganized both schools into the University of Nevada System under Chancellor Neil Humphrey who still serves today Both campuses have major new buildings and boast climbing enrollments With widespread community support the southern campus renamed University of Nevada Las Vegas in 1969 has built an amazingly strong intercollegiate athletics program for a school its size The Desert Research Institute located on the Reno campus provides an important research arm for the university working with such innovations as solar energy projects and planning assistance to oil rich but technology poor Middle East nations Complementing the university campuses is the once tiny community college division which now has spread from Reno and Las Vegas throughout Washoe and Clark counties Carson City and back to the University of birthplace Elko been a long important journey home again Is Northern Nevada's Most
