Square Man 494021 fiaieaa MaatoCard Via Oar By FAULT Sun Raleigh Bureau RALEIGH Lauch Faircloth is a pecularity in the Democratic Party these days a fairly well known politician who is interested in running for the US Senate seat being vacated by ailing Sen John East The party seem to find a top flight candidate Former governors Terry Sanford and Jim Hunt have refused to run LL Gov Bob Jordan has quashed any draft movement Bill Friday retiring UNC president appear to be very interested Even some lesser-known politicians like 2nd District US Rep Tim Valentine have said no But Faircloth is interested although he is holding back on making a decision until the situation shakes out a bit better Faircloth is in a much different position than the other Democrats He has nothing to lose except a little money and he has plenty of that He has something to win which for him would be a first an elective office Faircloth 57 has served in several administrations as a highway board member transportation secretary and most recently for 6M years as commerce secretary In his first try for elective office he finished third in a field of 10 seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 1984 a wealthy farmer and businessman from Clinton in Sampson County and is considered the most conservative major figure in state Democratic politics today Faircloth has some obvious strengths His personal fortune and his contacts within the busi Charft ness community rive him access to the money need to wage a campaign He has the cash avail All fall fashion boots reg $5995 NOW $10 OFF All handbags Kenya leather dress casual reg $14-384 NOW $990 $6290 able to get started as soon as he decides to do so He got into the gubernatorial race late but still put together a respectable organization that could be mobilized He was loyal to the party supported nominee Rufus Edmisten and has been rewarded by pledges of support from key Edmisten workers like Johnsie Setzer of Hickory Larry McAdams a Rocky Mount computer whiz who supported Faircloth in 1984 says Faircloth has access to the computers software and voter lists from the first race Many Democrats expect Jim Broyhill to beat David Funderburk for the Republican Senate nomination strength against Broyhill might rest in his ability to draw eastern Democrats back to the party But lose any business edge against the furniture family scion An interesting twist is possible in a Faircloth-Broyhill race Faircloth enjoys the support of many of the conservative Democrats who rive the National Congressional Club its strength The club is supporting Funderburk If Funderburk persists in his strategy of branding Broyhill a moderate then he may at the same time convince these Democrats that Faircloth is preferable to Broyhill Against Funderburk Faircloth could stress his own conservative credentials His combative personality might also be better suited to the hardball tactics Funderburk would employ Faircloth has some weaknesses not the least of which is that many liberal and moderate Democrats think any better than a Republican A Sanford associate reported that polls done for both Sanford and Hunt showed Faircloth with little name recognition and a high negative rating among those Democrats who knew who he was Faircloth is not pretty nor is he a very good public speaker His speaking style did improve markedly during the 1984 cam- Eaign however In small groups is outrageous sense of humor is a real bonus He has a terrible driving record and his use of state aircraft while at commerce was questionable He promises to make an announcement before the end of October All Levis reg $40 $49 NOW $2990 All Buskens reg $31 $35 NOW All-lanthAr VirviiM diess and casual reg $34 $55 Selected NIKE
