FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27 1970 DURHAM MORNING HERALD PAGE 16C Urban Blight Is Detected In Hollywood Jr i yr i But Business Commerce Active Skyscrapers Becoming Plentiful By RAY HEBERT Washington Post-Los Angeles Times News Service HOLLYWOOD On a warm summer evening 31 years ago 5000 wildly cheering movie fans turned out at one of those gala Hollywood premieres at the Pantages Theater It was the night of Aug 10 1939 Universal Pictures set up grandstands and the crowd satisfied with just a glimpse of their stars watched goggle-eyed and applauded a elite paraded into the theater The motion picture Tomorrow with Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne was a memorable one the night happy lively exciting A few days ago less than five blocks from the venerable showplace where so many premieres have been held tragedy struck in midafternoon A 68-year-old woman who considered Hollywood her home and was not afraid day or night to walk about freely was stabbed to death by a purse-snatcher In the 31 years between the premiere at the Pantages categories behind downtown Los Angeles and the Wilshire District If new office buildings are a barometer that it has fared well physically in the last few years Many including a 22-story tower completed in 1963 have arisen near the famed intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street and in the Graumans Chinese Theater area at Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue The Hollywood business core after hitting an economic low point in 1953 has made a comeback as a convenient location for white-collar workers but retail establishments have not kept pace There have been at least two proposals for a major new department store on Hollywood Boulevard in recent years but those ideas fell through Other developers have produced plans for a 40-story building complex including a motel and shopping facilities but they too were abandoned After studying Hollywood for three years City Planner Frank Fielding who directed preparation of the new community plan observed: been a lack of faith in Hollywood Plans and ideas came within a hairs breadth of reality But there are signs that things are beginning tion of 230000 to 326000 On the surface Hollywood the place still shows much of the glitter and excitement as well as the business activity of a town trying to live up to its name Yet few people whether they are among the estimated 35 million tourists who visit Hollywood annually or concerned community businessmen can help notice marks of deterioration behind the surface glitter Paint is peeling and plaster is flaking from some buildings bordering the star-studded sidewalk Novelty and schlock shops sprinkle the boulevard Male and female nude shows have invaded some bars Another near Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue advertises nudie art Down a side street only steps away from Hollywood Boulevard bungalows that once were neatly maintained are sadly in need of repair A lawn is overgrown with knee-high grass Despite its contrasts Hollywood has been an active commercial and business center for years ranking third in many BOBO TERRY'S Hour Cleaning "The Best In Dry Cleaning" fl and others at Chinese Theater and and the death of the 68-year-old widow something happened to Hollywood No one can pin down precisely what occurred or when the change started to take place But Hollywood's problems like those of so many other urban communities are partly physical and partly a product of a rapidly changing society Just by chance the day after the woman was murdered the Los Angeles Planning Commission adopted a master plan for Hollywood's physical development the idea being to make it a better place to live It is designed the planners said to restore fading image as the motion picture and entertainment capital of the world It establishes guidelines for a massive Hollywood center a combined entertainment park and business and commercial hub engulfing much of Hollywood Boulevard And it provides guidelines for Hollywood for years an established residential area with a wide range of neighborhoods to grow from its present popula- 1C SALE Recognize These 'Hippies?
