A Singular Discovery The Uones of an Indian Warrior Found In a Floating Log. It Is a matter of doubt whether 5Iacau1ay9 New Zealander will ever muse over the ruins oi London, but t-o rapidly has change followed change in the history of this Western country, that the philosopher of to-day may ponder over the disappearance, we may say extinction, of a savatre race that once occupied the land, and but afewi-core of years ago canape i ou the ground now covered by the uo jbes of a teeming city. It would be almost impossible lor th students ol Western annals to realize the stianen cnaDgcs that have followed each other so last, were it not that occasionally history is authenticated by the discovery ot traces' and evidences ot a race and customs that have vauished for-fyer. A discovery of this cnaracter was developed yesterday, which is not without inten-t and historic value. The facts respecting tb3 Walter are rrorJed" to Le as follows: ryy nun were ncaaed hauling out drift wood 6u the Illinois shore, nearly opposite tho Aisennl.

Some distance Irora the bank of the river Uiey observed a larere trunk oi a tree, which, 6t sound, tney determined to 'nVn possession of it possible, and, after some, difflcuitv, they succeeded in briugine; li to 'snore. On exauiinins; tho larce log, lioticed one end was partly split open, and that ltar peered as if it had been stalled or rilled up with idoe or leaves, or tome substance ot that character. The curiosity of the men was excited, and they went to worK, ana oy inserting wenges in the crack succeeded in splitting the log open, when the.v found it was hollow on the inside, and that the cavity was partially hilled up with what, at first siiiht, appeared the full form ot a man wrapped in a idalo robe. This singular sierht, as might be expected, at br-t excited their intense 9orjiisc, and one mail looked at the other in mute amazement. They at length sufficiently recovered themselves to prosecute the examination.

They removed the robe, which, althousrh bearing iudic-ttions of ereat aire, was still unbroken, and discovered inside the skeleton of a man, the flesh entirely wasted away, but the bones Hill adlieritic together, and preserving the form and outiine complete. Beside the bones of this departed Indian brave were found, it is said, a tomahawk, a quiver luM of arrows, and a bow, all exhibiting marks of great aee, and doubtless having been preserved from decay by the cxcIus'od of the air. We are not exactly informed as to whal course the men pursued ou making this singular discovery. It is to be hoped and presumed they burled decently the remains ot this defiiuct Indian warrior, and carefully collected the various articles found, as th-y are lull of iuterest to the antiquary and savor J. We do not profess to be very well versed In Indian lore, but we never recollect having heard that it was customary for the red aborigines to bury their dead in this way.

It may be, however, that this was an exceptional case, and its development may furnish a clue to some missing link in the chain of history. Were it not that it is unusual for bodies to float lip stream, we might venture to suggest that the bones thus brought to light are the remains of the great discoverer of the Mississippi, whom history records to have been buried in this way, some hundreds of miles south of this city, in order to save the body from mutilation by the Indians. We leave the matter, however, in the bands of the wise and learned to determine its historic Fienlncance aud importance. St. Louis liepub-tican, 2bth.
