While in Germany he visited Gatesville's. Bill Blankenship, who is doing operatic work there. Raborn sent The Messenger this article on Blankenship's accomplishments.) by GEORGE RABORN BRAUNSCHWEIG, Germany Bill Blankenship, son of Mr. and Mrs.

J. E. Blankenship of Gatesville, has achieved stardom as an opera singer here and in August began his second season as tured performer in the Staatstheater, this city's internationally famous 270-year-old opera house. The blonde, handsome, 30-yearold lyric tenor is currently singing in three different operas here, giving three performances per week during the 10-month season, and getting enthusiastic reviews for each. His most outstanding role, that of Rudolpho in Puccini's "La has received rave notices by the German press.

Blankenship also has been offered a contract here for the 1959-1960 seaplans to remain in Europe indefinitely although he hopes to make yearly guest appearances in America. Capacity Crowds Like opera houses throughout Europe, the Staatstheater is taxsupported, sells tickets by a subscription series, has a 70-man orchestra, and is filled to its 1,500 capacity every night. Four other American singers are performing here because in Europe, unlike A- merica, a young man or woman trained for opera can make a good living by singing. In America, there is almost no opportunity to do this except through singing at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, which engages predominately Euro pean stars and because of its short season can hire only a limited num ber of singers. Blankenship, who speaks German and Italian fluently, is married to the former Barbara Connally of San Antonio and has three children, two girls five and four years of age and a boy who is three.

Each child speaks German, too. Born in Gatesville, he took his first voice lesson there under Mrs. Ola Mae Parks, a piano teacher, moved to Austin at the age of 15, and was an Austin High School football star in 1945. After one year at the University of Texas, he transferred to North Texas State and graduated in 1950. During an ensuing three-year hitch in the Air Force, he was encouraged by the famous opera diva, Mary Garden, and won several first prizes in national television shows in New York.

Featured on Dallas TV Then he entered New York's Juilliard School of Music and sang the lead in several operatic premiers including "Capriccio" and "Idomeneo." During the summer of 1954 he sang in the opera and had a WBAP TV, thrice-weekly television show at where a young singer named Pat Boone was making his TV debut at the same time. In the summer of 1955, Mr. Blankenship taught voice and gave recitals at North Texas State and sang in Dallas. He received a scholarship to the Vienna State Music Academy, graduated from it in 1956, sang the title role in "Tales of Huffmann" and was acclaimed by Vienna cri- coffee costs more, than health If you drink four cups of coffee a day at a dime a you spend $146 a year for it.
