They played glorious football in a 4-2 home win over Manchester City in the first round of the Football League Cup last night. It was the fifth successive victory for Ipswich, new boys of the First Division, and in those five games they have scored 19 goals against seven: This was a particularly satisfying win, for Ipswich reversed the 4-2 wore by which Manchester City won at Portman Road on August 26 in the first game ever played at Ipswich in the First Division.

Gibson Earns Shrewsbury a Replay Newport County 0. Shrewsbury Town who reached the semi-finals of the Football League Cup last season, forced a draw in the first round of this season's competition at Newport. For this they can thank their goalkeeper. Gibson. who was twice hurt in making thrilling saves.

He was constantly in action during the first half. Hard as they battled, Newport's forwards could not get the ball past bun. Shrewsbury took a long time to settle down, but halfway through the second half they gained the upper hand. Their forwards, particularly Kenning and Starkey. were penetrative and that fine marksman.

Rowley. repeatedly caused the Newport defenders to shiver fearfully as he unleashed tremendous drives. Moran (2) and Crawford (2) scored the Ipswich goals and they were always the better side. Peterborough United, who have so often been F.A. Cup giant-killers, went out 3-1 at home to Blackburn and never seriously looked likt upsetting their First Division opponents.

Rigby for the first time in 11 years with the club and also discarded goalkeeper Wall and left-winger McNamee. A minute from the end Shrewsbury almost snatched victory. McLaughlin broke through, but his shot struck a goalpost.

Wallace was outstanding in the Shrewsbury defence and Walters frequently distinguished himself, once kicking off the goal-line. Yaffe Ware: lt tr a Herrary tugu FlsltF Spada two: Gitteos. Wallets. Stied. Powattey Wallace.

an F.A official explained that the term of office would be for only a year "The congress meet again in 1962 and a president will then be elected for a period of two years." he said. But. successful or not. there has never been any intention by Sir Stanley to resign as secretary of the F.A." Largest Gate One consolation for Peterborough was that their gate of 15.094 was the best in the eleven ties played last night. The aggregate of 108,279 was disappointing indeed compared with the crowds which could have been expected from comparable F.A.

Cup-ties Rotherham. losing finalists to Aston Villa the first time the competition was rim, came through by the only goal at Darlington, but they were the luckiest team of the night. Under-dogs throughout the match, they were rescued by several remarkable saves from Morritt, making his debut in goal. Rotherham never looked like scoring. but they were given their winner through a second half own goal by Peverell.

It was much the same sad story yesterday when all but two of the competitors from Warwickshire. Staffordshire.

Worcestershire and Shropshire were beaten in the opening rounds of the singles. The survivors are G. H. Woodward. a 14-year-old Coventry boy who carried Warwlckshtre's colours through to the 011 rd round.

grid K. Wooldridge iLongtoni, last year's runnerup. who performed a similar service for Staffordshire. Among the girls there were no survivors beyond the second round. Woodward, solemn of mien and invariably self-sufficient, won two matches.

His first victim was J. J. Wright (17), of Kent, a player 'twice his size. whom he beat 6-4, 6-3 after trailing 1-4 in the first set. Helped Own Downfall Wright.

serving with uncontrolled fury, contributed handsomely to his own downfall by frequently double-faulting. Woodward's excellently placed forehand close to the line did the rest. The Coventry boy had leas assistance from the opposition when he beat R. C. Oliver (Devon), a player his own age.

6-1. 6-4. Oliver made few mistakes but lacked Woodward's imaginative touches. Only towards the end did Woodward relax and some over -ambitious strokes cost him two successive games from 5-2. Warwickshire's big tragedy was the defeat of the county champion.

W. A. Lewis (171, of Pour Oaks. by 14-year-old M. R.

Lewinsorm, of Surrey. Lewis had already beaten R. Baker (171. of Wiltshire. in two sets and looked brim full of confidence.

Walton. 6-3. 6-0 in the second. In three previous attempts Miss Stone had not survived a round at junior Wimbledon and thus could be reasonably satisfied with her performance. Officially there is no seeding this week, though It does not take a very experienced eye to appreciate that the best players are strategically placed in the draw.
