Albion waste all Hope's good work By GRON WILLIAMS Chelsea 2. West Bromwich Albion 3 A LBION almost threw away this First Division match, allowing Chelsea to 4-2 get firmly into the game and equalise after Bobby Hope corners had enabled the Midland side to be two goals up in four minutes. This was a far different Chelsea side from that which lost last Saturday's Cup semifinal. They dominated for long periods of the game, but eased up in the last 20 minutes and Jeff Astle crowned a fine movement to get the winner which was his second goal of the game and his 23rd this season in League and League Cup. All in all.

Left-half Cut eyes beat Graham Williams. did much to steady his team during tie crisis periods and came through to put in four or Bye challenging shots when his forward line was flagging. Albion were unchanged from the side which beat Leicester City S-1 on Friday night. Chelsea made two changes from the team knocked out of the Cup.

Murray and Houseman formed a new right wing in place of Bridges and the injured Graham. Curvis JEAN JOBBELIN, the tough French champion, won the vacant European welterweight title in Paris last night when he stopped the British title-holder, Brian Curvis, after 13 rounds of their 15 rounds contest. The referee stopped the contest at the end of the 13th with Curvt bleeding from bad cuts around the eyes and forehead. Chelsea gave away two corners in the first four minutes and Albion scored from both. which Hope took.

His first. in 90 seconds. floated to Kaye, whose header was stopped on the line by Boyle only for Clark to nip in and slam it past goalkeeper Bonetti. The second corner-kick went to Astle, who stabbed the ball 1 into the net off Bonettra body. It was one of the most gruelling contests seen in a European ring between welterweights.

Both hard-hitters, the boxers pounded each other almost to a standstill in an all-action contest. Curvis, who was beaten 18 months ago by the world champion, Emile GriMths. suffered cuts early in the bout. Towards the end it took all his skill to prevent being knocked out by the rugged Frenchman, who showed tremendous stamina and Poor fight won by Calderwood Chick Calderwood, of Craigneuk, holder of the British light heavyweight title, fell sadly short of champion form in outpointing Dick Hall, of Nt York, in a ten-rounds fight at Newcastle last night. The biggest cheer was fir the timekeeper when he rang the bell to end a dull apology for a fight.

Hall did little except throw an locast nal swinging right to Calderwood's body, but the British champion just could not find a winning punch. Prescott fight The Birmingham heavyweight, Johnny Prescott, will not meet the French champion, Jean Paul Schiller, at Wolverhamp- ton on May 17.

Announcing this yesterday, promoter Alex Griffiths said: "It is unlikely that Prescoa could have reached peak condition in time. We have now given him two months in which to prepare for his next contest, against Jack Bodell, in Birmingham, on June 21." FOOTBALL LEAGUE First Division CHELSEA W.S. ALMON IV 3 (lamblmo. (CLirk. Persistent Although Albion had an anxious moment when Murray was slightly too square with an oblique shot, they kept Chelsea at full stretch for the first quarter-hour. Fraser and Hope, working with Scottish industry and persistence, built up attack after attack for the confident men up front.

Hope's fourth corner in 18 minutes was headed Just over the bar by Clark. But Albion had begun to ease off and Chelsea struck back in 21 minutes, 'rambling running in to drive in an Osgood cross. Now it was all Chelsea. Bo heavy was the pressure that Hope went back on one occasion to tackle on the by-line and concede a corner, but Just on the half-hour Albion were raiding again and wing -half Williams, taking a return pass from Kaye, shot straight to Bonetti. Penalty Chelsea equalised with a penalty in the 37th minute from Venables after Fairfax had brought down Hollins.

Heavy Chelsea pressure five minutes before the interval saw Potter knock a Houseman shot out for a corner, from which resulted more danger. Albion had cracked ominously after their early glorious moments and their goal was under pressure right up to half- time. Substitute Lovett came on for wing-half Fraser after the interval. Fraser had received treatment for a leg injury dus ing the first half. A period of niggling fouls reached a climax In 81 minutes when Chelsea left-back and captain Harris was booked for a foul on Brown, who limped after treatment.

Chelsea trainer, Harry Medhurst, signalled his team to calm down and the temperature of the game cooled. Then. in the 76th minute, came the decisive goal when Clark gave Astle a simple cross from which he scored close in. Clisketat Boone: ILlekap, lkorelet Lltgloo tsn llroa s. lltpt e.

Lay Hope. Clark. MIDLAND GREYHOUNDS Greenane Flash for final By oar GREENANE FLASH, successful in 13 of his last 14 races. is a confident choice to land the final of the fiportsview Trophy over 880 yards at Walthamstow tonight only his second attempt over the distance. Owned by Mr.

David Harrison and trained by Jimmy Quinn st Perry Barr, Oreenane Flash, who has proved unbeatable over 700 yards. raced for the first time over tonight's trip two weeks ago in the Salford heat when he put up the outstanding time of 49.095ec. The value of this can be gauged from the fact that an open race over the distance on the same night was won in while Bedford. a kurprise winner of the first heat at Rornf ord. recorded 51.17aec.

Lucky Arrow who led throughout in the third heat. put up 152.565ec. on heavy going at Slough last week. Greenane Flash 13 11-10 on in the ante-post betting, which may seem to be rather generous odds. Punters, however.

are probably taking into consideration the fact that he was corning back to the field in the closing stages at Salford and had only two lengths to spare from Miss Vanilla, who will be running on her home track this time. The Perry Barr hope trapped well on that occasion and was in front at the second bend. I consider him to be at his best when he has to come from be- LUDLOW HUNT POINT-TO-POINT RACES et BROMFIELD, NEAR LUDLOW SATURDAY, APRIL 30th Open Lodlos Cervedole Cup Also Open Roost NW Root 2.15 p.m. hind, which may well be the case tonight. In a solo spin over 525 yards of tonight's course, Greenane Flash recorded 29 97sec last Tuesday, which was faster than the winner of the Mackeson inter-track race on the same night.

All courses come alike to him and I have no doubt that he can extend his winning sequence to nine, at the expense of Lucky Arrow II and Miss Vanilla. There will be one Midland track in the semi-finals of the Mackeson inter track championship for in yesterday's draw for the quarter-finals, to be run during the week commencing May 2.
