BIO VALUE HERE COAST DEMA WILL BE San Francisco Chamber 'of Commerce to Seek' Portland's Aid in Drive on Shipping Board. ll.l.ll II llll I II SITUATION LOOKS DARK Vessels Senf Away From Portland Do Not Return, and Few New "Vessels Await Delivery, Convinced that every community of the Pacific coast must cooperate Jf additional vessels are to be secured from the United States shipping board, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce has appealed to the Portland chamber for its aid. In outlining- a united campaign to this end. The following: message has been received from California: "We are convlnred that tue entire Pacific coast should be together In a coordinated program for ee-' curing- ships from the shipping board from Pacific coast ports to other parts of the world. We are collecting data and would like to confer with you and your shipping committee personally to determine and outline a common ground for campaign.

"To this end, Leon O. Levy, an offi-rial of this chamber, who has the matter Immediate charge, will visit Portland October 20 for the speclftc purpose of (conference. He will make the neces-" Gary practical arrangements." AT LA If TIC STEEDS INTERFERE C. D. Kennedy, Portland agent for the 4 division of operations of the shipping board, returned Monday evening from a conference at San Francisco with H.

H. Ebey, assistant director of the division. Kennedy says that he was Informed that the urgent need for bottoms on the Atlantic coast to carry food to Europe, will necessitate most' of the vessels being sent there, probably not "to return. There are but 12 more steel ships to be delivered to the shipping board and after these have been sent to the At- lantic shippers predict that there will be a serious shortage of ships felt here. With these vessels definitely assigned the Atlantic it Is problematic how cargoes are to be moved from Portland to the Atlantic.

Kennedy's only Intimation of relief was that he deemed It probable that the shipping board might occasionally send a vessel around to this port from the Atlantic to take out cargo. "We would not object if all of these ships were going to relieve the food shortage in Europe," said W. D. B. Dod- son, executive secretary of the Chamber of.

Commerce, "but this has not been true In the past as many of these ves Mil have been turned over to private owners since going to the Atlantic. "The head of the division of opera- tions, 3. H. Rosseter, gave us the same idea during a visit earlier this year and Shortly afterward allocated a number of ships to the Pacific coast, practically leaving Portland, out of consideration. The chamber has not prepared a course of action, but will await the arrival of the Han Francisco shipping Strike Settlemrnt Nearer San Francisco.

m. MILLER BODY NOP YEHECOMD (Continued From Page One) question Miller today and on the result will hinge the possible prosecution or freedom for the prisoner. MILLER'S OWK ACCOTJ2IT According to Miller, he was adjusting a faulty spark on the launch engine when he felt the boat list sharply. "The first I knew that my wife was overboard was when I turned around from the engine and saw her in the water." Miller told the police after the tragedy. "I slowed down the boat and turned her around.

I was nervous and slowed down too late and the launch ran right over I tried to grab her as she was passing under the launch, but I failed. Then I heard a kick from the propeller and I ran to the stern, thinking she' had been caught in the propeller. All I found was her coat caught in the propeller blades. WAS 'WITH SB. COOK Miller Is well known in newspaper circles on the Pacific coast, particularly in Seatte and San Francisco.

For years he was the official photographer on the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He is of an adventurous nature and has made several trips to the wilds of Alaska to obtain unusual pictures. His chief hid for publicity lies in the trip he made with the now discredited Dr. Frederick Cook on his purported climb to the top of the continent in his Mount McKinley expedition. Miller always remained reticint about this, although he, above all othA-s, possessed information which would' have confirmed or disproved Dr.

Cook's -claim earlier than tbe actual expose did. Walter Miller went to SeatUe by boat, Mrs. Miller, eager to save her little property from designing hands, followed by train without Miller's knowledge, It is believed. Miller beat her to SeatUe by one day For on the way Mrs.

Miller stopped over at Portland to consult John F. Logan; her attorney. WARY OF HUSBAND "Bertha Elelnor Miller was distrust fnl of her husband. She believed he was trying to put something over. When he.

So Logan threw light this morning on the relations between the drowned woman, forme wife of George L. Baker. mayor of Portland, and Walter Miller, her husband, held by the Seattle authorities. APPEAL FOB TRANSFER "Several months ago Miller told his wife that he had got Into trouble during a visit to SeatUe and had "beaten up' a man. The man, he said, was going to sue.

To avoid the: necessity of paying damages, Miller suggested that Mrs. property, amounting to 11,000, be transferred to His mother. "Mrs. Miller consented. But when she came to see me she evldentiy had repented her decision.

Her husband had gone to- Seattle again, possibly to clinch the matter of the property. The whole thing as. she explained it 4o me, was rathw vague. But she going to SeatUe, without a doubt unknown to her husband, to protect her property from him. "The Millers bad quarreled for years, artmrdinaT trs isr nlftnr Twa wmV iro.
