Treasure Coast Newspapers Wednesday, April 6, 2005 OBITUARIES Richard Brecker, Indian River Shores A memorial service for Richard Lee Brecker, 83, of Indian River Shores, who died March 29, 2005, will be held at 4 p.m. April 7 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach. Ventura Lopez, Fellsmere Ventura Aguillon Lopez, 46, died March 29, 2005, in Fellsmere. He was born in Aquismon, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and was a resident of this area for two years. He was a laborer in the agricultural industry.

Survivors include his wife, Bartola Aguillon of Mexico; four children; five brothers; and one sister. SERVICES: Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. April 7 with a funeral service to follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Haisley Funeral Home Chapel, Fort Pierce. Burial will be at the Valle Verde Cemetery in Mexico.

Liberata V. Monteverde, Vero Beach Liberata V. Monteverde, 90, died April 4, 2005, at Home Quality Management of Palm Bay after a brief illness. She was born in Orange, N.J., and moved to Vero Beach nine years ago from Toms River, N.J. She was of the Catholic faith and had worked in the cosmetic industry.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Monteverde. He was born in Worcester, and moved to Vero Beach in 1976 from Springfield, Mass. Before retirement, he was head of the shipping department at Baush Machine Tool Co. for 28 years and a machinist for Albany Engineering System for seven years.

BRASHEARS, JR. Edwin L.

Brashears Jr. Born September 21, 1923. Died March 31, 2005. Brashears died suddenly, Thursday evening at his home in Vero Beach, Florida. After attending Williams College, Brashears served as a Naval Aviator from 1941 to 1945.

While in training, he earned a varsity letter for playing football at the University of Wisconsin. He was assigned to a tactical replacement squadron and upon being discharged from the Navy, Brashears attended Cornell University's school of Hotel Administration. He then returned to manage Chicago's prestigious Drake Hotel. In 1960, he oversaw the development and construction of the Drake Oak Brook Hotel until its opening in 1962. Brashears became president of Drake Hotel, Inc.

and later became president of the parent corporation, National Realty and Investment Company, a 1930 Delaware Corporation. The Brashears family owned and operated the Drake for forty years hosting visiting Kings, Queens and various social dignitaries until the establishment of a sixty year ground lease in 1979. Brashears then embarked on the development of the Drake Oak Brook Plaza, a twin tower atrium office building connected to the hotel by underground parking. In addition to his many years of service as a director and officer of the National Realty and Investment Company, Brashears was also a director and vice president of Drake Oak Brook, Inc. and was an executive director of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau.

He served as a director and vice president of the executive committee for Grant Hospital and also a director and chairman of the governing commission for Cook County Hospital. In 1975, Brashears was unanimously voted a citizen fellow of medicine by the board of governors. He was also a director and on the executive committee of the Lake Shore National Bank and a director the Greater Chicago Hotel and Motel Association. Catering Executives Club of America named Brashears' Executive of the year in 1976. A true Navy man, Brashears was an avid sailor and member of the Chicago Yacht Club.

He was a regular participant in the Mackinac Race and he built numerous boats including two ice boats that he sailed on Lake Geneva. In 1970, Sports Illustrated featured a story on The Big Little Boat" about the condor from Chicago on which Brashears sailed and won the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit. Brashears and his wife, Diana, of fifty seven years enjoyed memberships at the Indian Hill Club in Winnetka, Illinois and at the Moorings Club in Vero Beach, Florida. He is survived by his wife Diana, and their three children Diana, Lawrence (and wife, Carole), Stanley (and wife, Karen) one brother Charles Brashears of Winnetka, ILL, and Vero Beach along with four granddaughters. A memorial service will be held at the Community Church on Wednesday, April 6th, 2005 An interment and memorial service will be held at the Congregation Church in Winnetka, Illinois at a later date.
