To Mon series order Gazette TO CUP GROUNDS pIOUGH several League matches have been postponed owing to unfit pitches, reports from the Cup grounds indicate that all fifth round ties are likely to take place this afternoon. Strenuous efforts have been made to clear the snow and the only danger seems to be if heavy night frost freezes the turf and makes conditions dangerous. GROUND advantage should be a telling factor at St. Ei Secotit Figt vi gi i istot4 a a eight re Andrew's, where the engaged In the Cuo. Such a large ham City Manchester City number of League II clubs is unclash is one of the matches of us leauAl a this stage three passi nto the last eigh the day.

This tie will be Manchester City's biggest test so far In the AFTER their half-hearted competition. In the first stage display against the lowly they defeated Gatashead at home Newnort last week. West and then. after drawing at We st and in the fourth round, de- Bromwich Albion will surtested them by a single goal at prise their supporters if they Maine-road. even manage a point at It may sound odd to rank Sir- So th ampton a Imingham ahead of senior division to-day, but the Bolton.

but man for man the Albion are a peculiar side. club is a more Powerful side. Cup fighting is very different proposition from an everyday Leaguegame. It is the do or die writ which often carries more weight than skill. As far as the Maine-road replay was concerned it was Bolton who showed the sort of spirit that earns a side the victory: they did not get it because thedr inside forwards bad an off-day in the snow.

THE speedy wing men proved that the Manchester defence can be opened up and providing the middle men do not throw away the chances the goals are there for the picking. The Manchester defence has been outalanding this season, but when the pressure gets hot the polish begins to fall off and they do not look half so aura of themselves. Defences will probably take the honours in this afternoon's battle and the suggestion is that Manchester's will be the busier rearguard. Blues. on the other hand, are satisfied with their full strength attack whose penetrative powers should be sufficient to carry the side a stage further on the road to Wembley.

CUP teams with doubtful starters are unlikely to risk playing them on hard grounds. Stoke have Stanley Matthews and Frank Mountford recovering from injuries. They are to nave severe fitness tests before a decision is made. Distinctly a team of this sebum's showing at leastthey are just as likely to provide another shock result to-day, but this time with a balance in their favour. One thing is certain: they have the ability to overcome a side like Southampton If the feeling takes them that way.

If the ground is bone hard Southampton have the vote, but if a thaw is In operaton in the South, Albion are liable to reverse their last week's form at The Hawthorns. FTER an unsuccessful period Wolves will have a chance to regain the winning path at Molineux at the expense of Everton. Now that their interest in the F.A. Cup has ended Wolves will throw everything into the fight to maintain their position at the head of the League for the remainder of the season. In the campaign before the war a clash between these two aides was looked upon as something not to be missed, but since then tverton have tailed off to an average side and Wolves should comfortably hold the points.

AT the rate they are going Coventry City look like breaking all records for the number of drawn games in a season. To-day's match with Plymouth certainly suggests that Highfieldroad is in for another share and share alike affair. The injury troubles faced Plymouth some weeks ago have teen cleared up now and the team is back in the form that gave them' a kmg run at home without defeat. DECISION ON POOLS TO-DAY WITH a dozen matches already postponed by late afternoon and more cancellations in prospect, football pools, promoters were last night considering the question of declaring the pools on to-day's programme void. A general decision is expected this morning.
