'Cm MafbOnt fEBRUARY 1990Viegtf 9 iMiiiaaucc PoAs and Pea mis ca ireDD'fl cookomigi yetf by Majosha especially those that Snuzz himself wrote Snuzz's voice was more appropriate and engaging to the audience His scratchy soulful wailing combined with the more metallic sound of the band was reminiscent of the sound on the album "Like This" By the end of the show however Snuzz's scratchy voice had grown hoarse from his battle with the monitor Unluckily the band had scheduled Emaline for late in the set Emaline is one of the few slow and melodic songs from the Majosha repertoire a song the crowd wanted to hear It is not exactly a sad song but one filled with longing because won't walk in time" Snuzz's voice not only sounded grating but detached as if he were singing someone else's passions Of course he was singing someone else's passions and will be until the band fully assimilates Snuzz and writes songs geared to his range and style If the group continues to switch off Snuzz and Olson Pots and Pans can retain old Majosha groove fans and spark new interest from a more stately listening audience Despite his superficial hoopla Evan Olson is an excellent singer and his contribution should not be underrated in the drive to be taken more seriously Likewise it might not compromise the integrity of the band for Snuzz to make eye contact with the audience Technical problems can always be worked out and undoubtedly the very talented Pots and Pans will find the right niche each vocalist and continue to impress avid listeners Snuzz (left) sings with his eyes the Cat's Cradle during Pots and SMI photo by Jaw Dobbs closed while Evan Olson Pans concert Feb 6 Ben By JEAN DOBBS Correspondent What does Snuzz mean anyway? Snuzz is the new mellow lead singer for Pots and Pans (formerly Majosha) If Snuzz connotes drowsiness and Pots and Pans implies metallica that is only half the story of the newly formed band In their first Chapel Hill performance last Tuesday Pots and Pans proved that high-energy Majosha will not fade away but the band will clearly move in a new direction The band played many Majosha favorites including Clueless Guilty and Cool Whip but they did not do their popular cover of David Fame which always works an audience into a frenzy As usual the group did not pull any punches with their lyrics: Ken and the girl that roped him in? Well she got fat and now they're livin' in a trailer Obvious ly songwriter Ben Folds does not shy away from an ironic use of gender class or race stereotypes even in concert Guilty seems to be well-liked by college crowds: guilty white boy Turn me in Always had it easy I Charge me for my sins You wonder whv we're no fun 'Cause we're Lyrics like these in combina-ton wth Millard Powers' and Evan Olson's vocal antics and Majosha's constant changes in tempo made for terrific variation within and between songs The fast-paced performance of these tunes always made for a lively danceabie show But Powers has left the band and now Olson shares the role of lead vocalist with a very diffe- GALLERY DESIGNS 30-50 off Thru Feb 28 I Black Mountain Gallery 1 ILinhntaiRhl I)rapvT)rwrry 1 Eastgate Chapel Hill (919) 967-8101 NEW BAND In typical style (right) engages the audience at Folds is on drums rent stage persona Britt Suzell Snuzz represents songwriter Ben Folds' desire to move away from performance-oriented music to more music-oriented performance Whereas Olson dances makes faces cackles and flashes a contagious smile Snuzz stands still with eyes dosed in a classic pose His actual performance extends only to bq occasional crouch on the floor as he plays guitar This unceremonious display creates no visual distraction and forces the concert-goer to listen more carefully to the music and the lyrics This theory behind the new Pots and Pans may form a good creed for serious musicians but one that demands top-notch rm Most Winter CLOTHES played many of Majosha's hits which were written for Olson and Powers to sing Both oi these singers have extensive vocal ranges and can speed through complicated scores with precision Snuzz's strength however comes from a more emotional type of singing: technically he has little range and he must rely on his voice's natural depth and resonance for impact Snuzz's different type of voice caused some of Majosha's songs to fall a little flat Also with only three members on stage Evan was unable to play tambourine or cow bell which have added spice to the guitar bassdrum standard in the past In songs not previously sung 1 1 1 9 1 1 1 1 Ml 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 A REVIEW OF Pots and Pans Chapel Hid debut at the Cat's Cradle acoustics Unfortunately for the relatively inexperienced Snuzz his monitor at Cat's Cradle went out and he could not hear himself sing This technical problem meant static in his ears that caused him to compensate by singing harder The result was that his voice often cracked on the high notes and sounded strained throughout the show: the lyrics were often impossible to discern Technical difficulties were not the only cause for a flawed performance Pots and Pans price 1 1 1 1 1 1 fi-V 40 off one group of winter SHOES Swimsuits and spring clothes are here!
