(5 British Whig. opuer per Urben. Dicor. The Quebec Binea are an eminent branch of the gentleman's party. They paid pot long for a serenade to Mr.

Danserean in Montreal, and now have voted a bonus to a string band of amatears who sometimes play at the realdence of a Lieutenant Governor walli. ciently well I salaried to pay for his own music. Meanwhile the Quebec bospi: tals are languishing for fands, which the Government declines to give. The care of the afflicted is not half so enter taining to the gentleman in politics as 8. good fiddler.

Another contribation has arrived upon the grave question of Sir John Macdonaid's birthplace. The Phrenological Jour. nal, of New York, is giving his bistory and this time Kingston, and not Scotland or WA, is credited with the honors of his first appearance. This is antimely, for Sir John has no more 086 for that plea in this city, whereas 80 Adolphustown boom just now would have suited admirably. The biographer of the Journal should baverebears.

ed with Sir John. THE HEATHEN CHINEE. A Chinese office baa been opened in New York to fornish all kinds of Chinese labor, including house work, farm hands, shoemakers and cigar. workers. They should be supplied with the addresses of Sir Jehn Macdonald, Sir Charles Topper, and the other members of the great railway engineering firm of Canada, Onderdonk Co.

Sir John could pat in 88 stock in the concern a buge cartoon, illustrative of Chinese labor, displayed upon the streets bere in one of his elections and said to be slumbering in the back room of a faithful supporter. It is probably one of the assets standing against the unpaid bills of his last campaign. BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION. The News avers that money has been used to admirable advantage in Reform campaigns in Kingston. Yes, Messrs.

Carruthers, Robinson and Gunn have paid their legitimate bills, which Sir John has not done. But what do the courts say upon this point? Mr. Ro binson's seat was protested against, but the protest was dropped, the only 9ug. gestion of bribery proven being the licitation of a Q.C's brother in Kingston, that if the proposer was given a certain Government office the eminent Q.C. would support the Grit cause.

Mr. Robinson did not think the game worth the candle, evidently, for the evidence says he declined. Then Sir John was protested against, proven guilty of gross bribery through the unkind assistance of a gentleman of the News in spite of a most treacherous memory, unseated, and very nearly disqualified. The less said about bribery in Kingston elections the better for Tory credit. DUTIES FOR REVENUE.

It was asserted by Sir Charles 'Topper during the session of 1882 that in 1879 there was no choice between adopting the National Policy and resorting to direct taxation. Such was not the case. The difficulty under which we labored was temporary, and was sure to disappear with the return of better times. An increase of $2,225,000 in the Customs over 1878 would provide for the deficit of that year and an increase of $1,100,000 in the expenditures, whish would have been ample to cover all necessary increase under an economical Government. This would have been aD increase of 18 per cent.

During the period from 1878 to 1881 the revenues of the United States rose from 000,000 to $198,000,000, without any change of tariff, equal to 52 per cent. increase. We may surely estimate that our revenue would bave increased third as fast as theirs during the same period under the influence of the same cause. Sir Leonard Tilley estimates the revenue from Customs the present year at $10,500,000. This is a sum over $6,600,000 greater thaa would bave been required to meet the expenses of the Government had the Liberal party remained in power, and that vast sum represents the amount of needless tion to which the people of Canada are subjected under the present Govern ment.

ADVANTAGES OF OFFICE. The amount paid to some of the Do. minion Ministers for janketing is enormous. For instance, Sir Leopard Tilley has drawn from the public treasury for tripe to England the sum of $8,009.80, besides the further sum of $808.21 for himself and Secretary for a trip to Washington in 1891. Sir Charles Topper, during the last three years, drew from the public treasury for trips to England the enormous som of $5,879.99.

Besides this he drew $1,600 for the expenses of his trip to Britisb Columbia in the fall of 1881, and also charged to the conatry the sum of 81,525.44 for the travelling expenses of two officers of his department who with him the pleasures of the trip. In addition to a departmental salary of $7,000 per year, Sir Charles Tapper's travelling expenses have cost the country within a trifle of $7,000. Sir John Macdonald has drawn from she pablie treasury since the Ist Jann ary, 1879, for travelling espouses, the outs of $9,159.38. or over $8.000 per year in addition to a departmental s8. 48 First Minister of $8,000.

HI visit to Eugland in 1879 cost $5, 624.87; in 1880, when accompauied by Col. Debais, in 1881, when with his associates in Loudou. is the close of 1881 and beginning of 1882, $9.049.05. we contrast these expenses with the economy prac: tised under the late Government. and it will be found that Sir John Macdonald's pleasure trips alone cost the country more than all the travel ling expenses of Ministers during the existence of the Reform Administrs tion.

Before Ministers Conservative Ministere(3 Sir John THE BRITISH WHIG, FRIDAY, MAY 36. MURDER IN MONTREAL. A Fearful Butchery -Hacked to Death- The Criminal's Wretchedness. Montreal, May horrible murder was perpetrated here last night in second class hotel, kuown as "The Californian," by a Swede named John Oliff SOD, on a fellow countryman named Johannes Jacobson. The two were stopping in the same room, aud Oliftson was about to eave the hotel when the landlord suspected something wrong, and immediately ran to the room, where he found Jacobson lying on the bed dead, the murder having been accomplished by the 'aid of a beer bottle.

Deceased's throat was cut, and several deep gashes were his throat. The morderer was instantly arrested, when two watches, five sovereigns, and several other articles belonging to his victim were found. An inquest has been opened this morning. The prisoner is a laborer, and is over fitty years of age. Oloffsen lay upon his back, with his head, face and body covered with blood.

Jacobson met the startled look of the hotel keeper with pantomimic protestation that he knew nothing of the manner in which his friend had come to his death. He then tried again to depart, but was held until the police were sent for. A doctor was also called in, on the presumption that there might be some life in the poor victim. This hope proved to be groundless. The body presented a woeful spectacle.

There were contused wounds on the head, one of them on the left eyebrow and temple, and others on the top of the head. A gaping knife wound had cut into the neck on the right side, and there was on the left jaw another gash euding in a deep stab in the neck. A knife wound in the breast also let the life current out in copious streams, and the bedclothes were deeply stained. The clothes of the prisoner were spotted and smeared with blood. His tobacco, papers, and bands were also covered with it.

The knife or dirk that had done the deed was not to be found. The theory advanced is that Oloftsen was lying on the bed asleep when he was attacked by Jacobson with the bottle, the blow partially stunning him; that when he attempted to rise Jacobson struok the terrible blow which made the wounds in the jaw and left cheek, and that when he fell back from this blow the wounds in the right side of the neck and heart the murderous business. In less than five minutes from the of his arrest Jacobson was found lying on the bottom of his cell fast asleep. He seemed perfectly dazed when he was aroused to answer Little can be known of the antecedents of either of the men. The hotel keeper says that Oloffsen paid Jacob son's board, and generally looked after him, and that the prisoner had no money of his own.

Oloffsen appeared to have been on educated man, and it may turn out that he was bound west, and was taking Jacobson with him 88 a farm hand. Letters found upon the prisoner belonging to the murdered man were stained with blood. It appeared from them that "Herr John Oloffson" WAS 8 man who had friends in Stockholm and also in Guttenberg. A Pretty Muss. New York, May is now stated that Canon Bernard did not steal 000 francs from the Bishop of Tournay, Belgium, but brought it to this country for safe-keeping and to protect the interests of the Bishop.

The new Bishop authorized Goodbue, the Montreal lawyer, forty per cent. commission for recovering the property. Bernard was found in Chicago earning his own living, not having touched the Bishop's funds. Bernard transferred the property to Goodhue, who gave it to the Bishop's lawyer in London. Yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock a room in the St. Lawrence Hotel was entered and a silver watch and chain belonging to Samuel Jenkins stolen from his clothing, The police were quickly informed of the larceny, and Officer James Nesbitt detailed to work up the case. The constable visited the various places where second hand goods are bought and sold, but got no trace of the missing articles.

Nesbitt, however, laid a trap for the thieves -he asked to be notified in case any one appeared and offered the watch and chain for sale. Today at noon John O'Neil, who is not a stranger in the police court, entered one of the places to which we have referred and asked the proprietor to advance a sum of money, by way of pur. chase or loan, upon a watch. The latter, on pretence of changing a $10 bill stepped outside, and gave Nesbitt "the tip." The officer at once made for the shop and pounced upon the thief. While taking O'Neil tothe police station Nesbitt noticed Johnny Kelly, a bar tender, and lately upon a protracted carouse, running up street, and at once suspected that he was in some way connected with the theft.

On leaving his suit prisoner of the in the station (Kelly) he went and in found pur runaway him concealed in the -barn in rear of Beaupre's hotel, feigning drunkenness. Upon his person the stolen chain was found. He was taken to the lock up. Meanwhile Sergeant Carson was engaged in searching the person of O'Neil, and having stood off from him a few minutes he bolted out of the side door and made a futile attempt to escape, being captured at the Bank of British North America. Police Court-Friday, Edward Bennett was summoned yes.
