The Chapel HiU-Carrboro Interchurch Council for Social Services win petition the Orange County Board of Commissioners Tuesday to increase the county's allocation to the Orange County Social Services Department's emergency assistance fund The Interchurch Council is making this request in order to relieve the council of some of the burden they have been shouldering in emergency assistance in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area Mrs Lawrence Nielson president of the Interchurch Council said this morning she did not feel the county's appropriation of $5000 a year to the county Social Services emergency assistance fund was enough to cover the need in this area for the year in the position where we feel that when the emergency assistance fund is exhausted the responsibilities in the area of emergency assistance fall on the Interchurch Council" she said asking the county to increase their emergency family assistance fund so that it will be sufficient to cover the county's need there during the year" Nielson said she felt the need in that area was accute and that more than double the current allocation of $5000 would be needed to meet that need She said the Social Services Department presently helped families in need of emergency assistance only so long as the allotted funds lasted She said that emergency assistance funds were used to help families in need with food
