The Journal Speaks Its Mind, 1859 "Skating is a healing and proper pastime, when indulged in at the right time.

We wish to enter our solemn protest against the practice of skating 'on the river on Sundays. The practice is bad, and tends to create a disrespect for the day, as well as disrespect for the community. There are others in the city who have a right to have their opinions respected, as well as those who skate. If a person skates industriously all week, he won't need to skate on Sundays for the exercise. If he works hard all week, he won't suffer for exercise, if he should rest on the Sabbath.

We hope the day will be respected for the opinions of others, if they have no respect for the day themselves." Flappers scandalized the country in the Roaring Twenties, but in 1882, the Journal published this item: "Cigaret smoking seems to be quite a habit in this city, amongst the ladies, as last evening no less than five of the fair ones were noticed on the corner of College Ave. and Eleventh enjoying a smoke." Belle City Manufacturing Co. opened its doors as a manufacturer of farm machinery in 1882.
