THE WEEK'S IOWA NEWS, A rank swindle is being worked in towns in southeastern Iowa and it has found many victims. The swindler is a man gotten up like ft trump, who calls nt the door for something to eat. Whether accommodated or not, just as he leaves he pretends to picU up a gold ring from the ground. He makes inquiry of its ownership, and says it must be a valuable one, as it is marked 18k, and is handsomely engraved. No one about the house knows anything of it, and then he offers to sell it. In two or throe instances he succeeded in getting as high as $3, but has disposed of several for $1 each. The rings cost just 00 cents a dozen. It involves an estate left by Chas. Wamsly of Akron, who committed suicide last July. Chas. Wamsly came to this country from England and was duly naturalized. Shortly before he died he willed all his property to his father in England. Now it develops that the Twenty-second general assembly passed an act providing that an alien cannot inherit real estate from a citizen of the United States. The personal property is not in question, but the law seems plain as to the real estate. However it goes to the courts for settlement. The property affected amounts to $12,000. If the state is successful the property goes to the school fund. Owing to the difficulty in getting good trees John Y. Stone of Glenwood. planted only 6,000 apple trees this spring. He made it up in grapes, however, having planted 30,000 Moore's Early. ______ Freedom, Leland Stanford's celebrated stud, now four years old, passed through Cedar Rapids Thursday night in a special horse car, attached to a Northwestern passenger. The doors were opened and a number of people were given an opportunity of viewing the famous animal. As a yearling colt he trotted a mile in 2:20i, breaking the record. Since that time he has not made a mark. The trainer said Freedom was being taken to Syracuse, N. Y., and that he would enter the eastern races, in which there was pretty fast, company. _______ The university of Iowa has sent its- base ball team on a trip through^ Illinois and Wisconsin, says the Chicago Herald, to moot the college teams of these states. The team had a good record in former seasons and will probably make a good showing against the teams scheduled for this trip, none of which it has ever met before. H. c. MCCOY, M. This great aggregation requires three railroad trains to transport it from city to city, while the exhibitions are given in three rings, on two elevated stages, and upon a great third-of-a mile track, under the largest canvas pavilions ever erected.
