Maxwell accepted an appointment from Governor Roger Wilson and was sworn in to serve as Missouri's lieutenant Governor on November 16. In making the appointment, Governor Wilson commented, "The past few weeks have shown us the importance of the office of lieutenant governor. As illustrated by the vote of the people on November 7, Joe Maxwell is the right person for this important job." The lieutenant governor serves as the Senior Citizen Advocate and their statewide voice. "The senior citizens of Missouri deserve this vacancy to be filled," stated MaxwelL The. lieutenant governor also serves on numerous boards and leave trash loose in containers.

It was motioned and sec-(Conthtued on Pago 2) Following friends, supporters and constituents of the 18 Senatorial District, state Senator Joe Maxwell, D-Mexico, announced that he is resigning his senate 1 seat to allow a special election be scheduled as quickly as possible to assure manned representation for the citizens of northeast Missouri in the state Senate. Consistent, effective representation is essential to the ritinma it is my honor to serve, Maxwell "By resigning my seat now, the citizens will have the chance to vote for a new senator from the 18 District as quickly as possible. This will avoid unnecessary delays in senate representation and help assure the citizens of the 19 District a continued voice in the General Assembly." Maxwell, who was elected Missouri's next lieutenant governor during the November 7 General Election, will be required to resign his senate seat prior to taking the oath of office for the new position on January 8. Under state law, at least 10 weeks is required for the governor to call a special election once a legislative seat becomes vacant By resigning the office now. Maxwell enables the Governor to call a special election as quickly as possible so the position can be filial early in the next regular legislative session.

"It has been a tremendous honor to serve as Senator from the 18 District, and I look forward to mwtiimiwy my service to these citizens all Missourians as -r-4- Clayton Seeks Nomination For Missouri State Senate LL Gov. Other present were: Bill Stolen, Helen Steffen, Greg Doscher, Casey Powers, Kevin Smith, Gary Grubb, Wayne Rudd and Karen LassweU. The meeting opened with the minutes being read and approved. The treasurers report was presented, studied and accepted. The Board of Aldermen and the Mayor quickly took care of a few knotty local problems: The Beer Barrel owner, built a deck to his property directly over the Citys water meter. A letter will be sent to the owner, Fred Ingrim requesting the deck to be removed.

Deer Harvest Up From Last Year Conservation Agent Gene Lindsey, reported to the Star that the number of deer harvested on opening weekend jiras up consid- erably compared to the number i killed on opening weekend fin- the year of 1999. He reports that there was an increase of 16J121 more killed this last weekend.

The state wide total for deer killed in Missouri was 111,002 and the top three counties were: Montgomery' Howell 2,180 and Macon 2,175 for 2000. The Northeast Region total was 21,790 which was an increase of 2,110 over last year which was 19,680. The top three counties in Pike with 184 and Lincoln with 190 for 2000. Lewis County had 1,132 deer harvested which was an increase of 58 over last years total of L079 In 1989. The deck stations reporting in after the opening weekend were Fiprem Depot at Mon-ticeDo with 626 brought in and Ewing's Bdmonstons Coop with 506 brought in.

There was only one nonfotal accident in the northeast region at Clark County, this year. Last year for opening weekend there were 5 non-fhtal accidents reported and one fatal accident 7 representing all of Marion County and part of Shelby County. Clayton practices law in Hannibal and is a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Hannihni Chamber cf Commerce, the Hannibal Jaycees and the Bethel German Colony. He serves on the Board of the Northeast Missouri Sheltered Workshop and the Local finer- gency Planning Committee. Clayton is engaged to be married in June 2001.

Stolen Aerostar Van Recovered On Tuesday November 14, 2000, the Heartland Recovery Center in LaBelle reported that a 1990 Ford Aerostar Van had been stolen between a.m. and 60 ajn. At approximately 10:15 ul, Waykm Kinde, age 18, was taken into custody in Selina county for Tampering with a Motor Vehicle. Kinrie, a walk away from the Recovery Center was found to be in possession of the van. Kinzle is currently being held in the Saline County Jail in lien of $10,000 bond.

Robert Clayton, D-Hannihal, has announced that he will seek the democratic nomination to replace State Senator Joe Maxwell, D-Mexico, 18 District Maxwell who was elected LL Governor on November 7 resigned his Senate seat to permit a special election to take place as soon as possible. "I have worked hard at serving all of Northeast Missouri in my six years as State Representative and consider our interests in better highways, a strong plan for economic development and better access to healthcare to be issues in common throughout the 18 District, spoke Clayton. A Democratic and Republican candidate will be nominated by their respective 18 District Senatorial Committees to run in that special election which has yet to beset Clayton was re-elected to his 4 term in the House on November Despite the cold weather, on the afternoon of November 11, 2000, the opening of the walking path at the Durham Community Center was a success. There were several adults and children from Durham and the surrounding area who attended the ribbon cutting. After the ribbon cutting, everyone made at least one half-mile walk on the path. Maxwell noted that he is excited to have an opportunity to begin serving the people of Missouri now.
