in Garcia Murdered at HJbrook by Harry Lyons John Woodsfalias Kid an Accomplice The Murderers Bite the Dust a Few Hours After Committivg the Deed On Sunday night last a tragedy occurred at Holbrook in which Juan Garcia a Mexican an old and re spected citizen of that place received a pistol shot in his right thigh which caused his deatlv about twelve hours afterward Garcia and one or two companions were engaged in playing cards in the Pioneer saloon in Holbrook between twelve and one oclock in the morning when Red accompanied by Harry Lyons a pi inter well known in Flagstaff both of whom were in a stateof intoxication entered and after watching the game for a short time Red asked Garcia in ademandingsortof tone of voice to lend him two dollars Garcia replied that he had no money to loan or he had but little and could not spare it Red diew his revolver and with it in one hand with the other he grabbed the money lying on the table in front of Garcia saying he would hae it an way Garcia arose from the table and remarked to Red that he could not spare the money and asked him to return it to the table Red cocked his revolver and fired missing his man when Garcia grabbed the gun and hit his antagonist over the eye with the butt of it cutting a severe gash Up to this time Lyons had not interfered particularly with the fracas but seeing his partner was getting the worst of it drew his pistol and fired the ball entering the thigh of Garcia as stated The firing caused the saloon to be cleared rather suddenly when the men rifled the money drawer and left the place stopping at the saloon below which was closed but they knocked for admittance Bing refued they passed on down the street firing their pistols in the air and coming to the house of an acquaintance endeavored to obtain horses to make good their escape Not getting animals they started out on foot On Monday a posse of men headed by Hon Houck started in pursuit oi the outlaws and trailed thein to one side of the town about two miles distant and from thence they returned to town and crossed the river and to the hills At about it oclock Monday morning the part came upon the outlaws about three miles from town where the murderers had erected astone Wall in preparation for defense As the party came up a pistol from behind the defence appeared above the will and a shot was fired at Iloucks but without effect A volley horn the pursuing pirtys rifles riddled the stone wall and first Red came out in full view when a rifle ball struck him in the head killing him instantly Lyons then ad vanced pistol in hand a sten or two was hit with a rifL ball and turning was hit several times in different parts of his body falling acioss Red When the party came up Red -was dead but Lyons was still breathing and almost instantly expired The bodies were taken to Holbrook where an inquest was held alter which the remains were placed in boxes and buried outside the cemetery Their lamented victim was buried on Tuesday and a large concourse ot people accompained the naii the grave Red was what is termed a tin horn gambler a hold up and a bad man generally Harry Lyons had been keeping company with him for some time previous to going St Johns when in a state of intoxication they would fire their revolvers in the streets and otherwise dis turbthe peace Lyons was not naturally a vicious boy but when in liquor and led on by a desporado like Red was no credit to himself It is the general mpression among the citizens of Holbrook that both met their just dues and the details of this affair shouldibe a warning to
