the stadium Dallas went 81 yards in 10 plays with only one pass before Hill circled behind Lance Alworth's thundering block on Redskin linebacker Jade Pardee to make It 7-0 On Dallas' next possession Morton scrambled away from Redskin defensive Verion Biggs to find Hill behind the Redskin secondary on a 28-yard touchdown pass After Garrison ran 25 yards tor the third Cowboy touchdown the tough Cowboy fullback rambled 41 yards for the longest run In Us career to set up Morton's touchdown run which completely fooled the Redskin defense Curt Knight kicked a 16-yard field goal late in the Hill and Walt Garrison to surge Into the National Football League playoffs for a record seventh consecutive year The defending Super Bowl champions earned the National Conference "wild berth with the victory over the NFC Eastern champion Redskins who played without their brilliant running back Larry Brown sidelined with a knee Injury Hill became the first Cowboy player to ever rush for more than 1000 yards In a season as he scored on a 10-yard run and snared a 20-yard pass from quarterback Craig Morton The Cowboys now 10-1 for the season scored tour Hill gained 111 yards on 24 carries to set a club record of 1010 yards It was the first time that two Cowboy runners had gained over 100 yards In the same game as Garrison gouged out 127 yards In 10 carries The Cowboys stuck mainly to the win By TED BUSS Sports Editor DENNIS Redmond could have used an extra set of eyes in the back of his head Saturday afternoon If the courageous Drake University quarterback had been blessed with a spare pair of peepers he would have seen big Cleveland Elam bearing down on his blindside like a locomotive ELAM HAS BEEN the unsung hero of Tennessee State's magnificent defensive line but Saturday at Memorial Stadium he was THE hero in the Tigers' stunning 29-7 victory over Drake University In the second annual Pioneer Bowl Classic A good crowd of 0200 braved the miserable weather to watch Tennessee State add luster to Its No 5 college division football ranking There were more than 8000 advance tickets sold five times as many as last year but the bleak conditions kept game-day buyers home by the fireplace DRAKE ENTERED the game a slim two-point favorite but the co-Missouri Valley Conference champions couldn't handle Tennessee massive five-man rush Redmond trying gamely to comeback on two glmpy knees was decked eight times by the lusty Tigers The gallant Bulldog quarterback was knocked out of the game once but later came back for more and more Is what Elam and the Nashville Tcnn boys gave them It was supposed to have been an offensive game but Tennessee State's best offense was its defense The Tigers scored two touchdowns In the first quarter without running a play from scrimmage ON DRAKE'S THIRD possession of the game punter Slade Willis hit a low 37 yarder to Larry Dorsey at State's IS The 184 pound jet left several pairs of Drake shoes scsttered on the Astro Turf as he danced his way (Ronnie Littleton style) 82 yards for the first touchdown Everyone except Drake coach Jack Wallace had a shot at Dorsey but nobody laid a hand on the elusive speedster FTeshman Jonas Sears replaced Redmond for one series after a shot from the blindside put the senior out of the game late in the first quarter Sears because he Is a scrambler might have been the Bulldogs best bet under the torrid rushing conditions but on this particular series he had a pass batted up Into the air by Elam and Tennessee St heroes laugh after victory By ED LANE Times Sports Writer A couple of admiring girls stood out- side the Tennessee St locker room as Tiger running back Fred Lane trotted off the field after his team had defeated Drake in the second annual Pioneer BowL "Do you all want my Lane said seriously before he took off his helmet and started grinning The two girls clapped their hands and started laughing Franklin Richard Tennessee manager went up to a reporter In the
