OBSERVER MARCH 22 1984 23 Leisure and entertainment guide Observer On The show goes on to beat the Nazis MEL Brooks and Anne Be (PG) at the Odeon Bancroft dance the light fantastic in To Be Or Not To from tomorrow By JOHN BROOKER where she later wakes up What starts oft with an interesting premise sinks without trace once our hero buys the fairground beauty After that it's talk more talk and nothing but talk Black cult comedian Richard Pryor is topbilled but is on screen for only five minutes Some may call it loving I call it a complete waste of time I Nightmare Vacation (CBSFox 81 min 1983 18) TWO cousins arrive at Camp Arawak for summer vacation but their visit becomes a nightmare as one by one the young guests are brutally murdered Who dunnit? And why? Killer on the loose uses bow and arrow a nest of bees a knife scalding water etc in his contribution to wiping out the teenage population of America Same old thing but while there's a market for this sort of bloodletting they'll keep making them! Actually called Sleepaway Camp Bronx Warriors (EV 84 min 1983 18) IT is 1990 and the Bronx has been sealed off as a no land where street gangs battle for supremacy A young girl runs away and joins up with Trash leader of one of the gangs The Manhattan Corporation send in an exwarrior Hammer to get her back but she wants to stay and Trash battles his way across the Bronx to find The Ogre and ask for help in keeping the visitors at bay Noisy Italian actioner a cross between Escape From New York and The Warriors The late Vic Morrow does his best with the banal script but most of the cast deserve everything they get Mindless violence is the whole show Fear No Evil (Embassy 87 min 1981 18) WHEN Lucifer is challenged by three archangels he accepts mortal death knowing that he will be reborn His new is Andrew Williams who becomes fully aware of his awesome powers on his 18th birthday He seeks revenge on the people of his home town but one of the archangels now in the body of an elderly lady senses his presence and rallies the forces of good for a final showdown Spectacular special effects boost this Exorcist clone which covers old ground but still packs a wallop IT is 1939 and Poland is about to be invaded But the show must go on for the Warsaw-based Bronski Theatre Company in To Be Or Not To Be showing at the Odeon Harlow from tomorrow Mel Brooks and his wife in real life Anne Bancroft star in this hilarious musical story of a plan to save the Polish underground resistance Brooks plays Frederick Bronski an egotistical actor- Odeon spotlight director who is constantly upstaging his beautiful wife Anna Despite his amazing performances in Naughty Nazis and Highlights from Hamlet Anna still manages to attract the attentions of a dashing young lieutenant Andre Sobinski When Poland falls to the Germans Sobinski flees to England with a group of young airmen and there he meets the sinister Professor Silots-ki who claims he is going back to Warsaw to fight the Nazis The airmen give the professor a list of contacts in the Polish underground but Sobinski realises Silotski is a spy To prevent the underground falling into Gestapo hands the lieutenant goes back to Poland where he enlists the help of Anna and the Bronski Theatre Company Bronski gives his best performances ever when he first impersonates Colonel Erhardt the Nazi contact Codename: The Soldier (Embassy 87 min 1982 18) THE Russians posing as terrorists steal enough plutonium to destroy half the oil supply and threaten to do it unless the Israelis withdraw from the West Bank of the Jordan The chief of the CIA calls on The Soldier to draw the world back from the brink of a nuclear holocaust so he puts a highly-dangerous and unorthodox plan into action Gripping actioner from the same team that created The Exterminator This is a much better film although the accent is still on a fast pace and bloody violence Its one drawback is that it is often hard to follow as the action switches quickly from one part or the world to another But the action including an exciting race for life on the ski slopes helps cancel out deficiencies in the plot A winner for fans of tough thrillers Bad language Some Call It Loving (Nickleodeon 90 min 1973 18) A JAZZ musician is attracted by a Sleeping Beauty at a fairground and buys her for $20000 He takes her home CRAFTS ANTIQUES FAIR
