At that time, they are as dormant as during the winter. The best way to treat them is as follows: Have the plants freshly dug.

Get them planted in the shortest possible time after digging; but, if the burlap around the ball of earth and roots suggest dryness of the soil inside, place the ball in water deep enough to cover it and leave it there overnight. Dig the hole for each plant at least 1 V2 times the diameter of the earth ball and fill it to the trim with water. Let this soak away before planting. Tramp It Down. If the burlap is made with a dense mesh, cut several slashes in it.

After placing the ball in the hole so that its top is about even with the soil surface, cut the strings and also cut away the excess burlap on top of the ball, leaving that on sides and the bottom intact. Shovel in good rich earth around the ball. If this earth is moist, tramp it down hard arotind the ball; if dry, pour in water; let this settle, add more soil and repeat the soaking. A day or two later, tramp this soil hard. In all cases of late summer planting, make a circular ridge of soil around each plant to form a bowl-like depression, filling this with water each week until you can be sure that To moisten soil, make circular ridge around plant and fill "bowl" each week.

This is a good time for you to transplant or separate Oriental poppies so as to increase your stock of these desirable plants. Take the plants up carefully and examine them. Old plants often have several "eyes" which may be cut apart with generous portions of the root and planted as separate plants. Look for Mites. Even pieces of root planted proper soil may, under favorable conditions, produce new plants.

This variety generally is considered so difficult to transplant and propagate that many gardeners hesitate to disturb old plantings. Plants grown from seed are not always true to type and too often of an inferior quality. If your evergreen foliage begins to show a grayish or brownish cast, look over the plants to ascertain if they are infested by the red-spider mite. These insects are too small to be seen on the foliage so hold a piece of stiff wrapping or similar paper under a branch, tap lightly, and if you find some very small reddish particles scurrying about you may be sure that some quick action is necessary. Spray with a miticide, directing the spray from below as these tiny insects live on the underside of the foliage.

On a $3,000 car, with a $1,000 down payment and the balance spread over two years, the customer will pay an additional $10 to $15 carrying charge. A final blow to the customer's pocketbook is the new attitude which the manufacturers have been working frantically to build into their dealers. Iceland's Production Of Whale Oil Rises REYKJAVIK I 1 a nd's whale-oil production increased in 1955, largely because of one of the biggest whale catches in the last decade some 400 whales compared with 330 in 1954. Whale-oil production climbed to 2,273 tons compared with 1,426 tons the year before. The Racine Chess Club elected officers at the first meeting of the fall season Monday night at Douglas Park. The writer was elected president, succeeding Hugh Myers, who has moved to Illinois. Frank Buttenhoff succeeds Walter Teubner as vice president, and Jack Byrd was elected secretary treasurer, trading jobs with Art Domsky who has been appointed the new rating statistician.

In addition two directors, Rudy Kunz and Henry Meifert, were elected, and with the other three elected officers will constitute a board of directors. Matters discussed at the ineeting included: Desirability of establishing a constitution and by-laws for the group; the possibility of a change in the site and weekly meeting night; an increase in dues to permit the purchase of additional equipment such as chess clocks, new sets, boards and other necessary supplies. It was decided that an entry fee will be charged for each future tournament to defray the cost of prizes. The entry fee will be 50c for adiilts, and 25c for school-age players. The posed increase in dues would be $2.50 for adults, and $1.00 a year for school-age players.

As an experiment the first tournament of the season will be a combination Swiss-Round Robin. The first half of the tournament will consist of a four- or five-round Swiss tournament, depending on the number of entries, with the top five or seven players qualifying for a round-robin second phase of the tournament. The remainder of the field will be divided into sections of five or seven players, who wiU in turn play a round-robin among the members of each group. It is felt that this will tend to encourage lower rated players since they will have a reasonable chance to win a prize in competition with others players of their strength. 1958 BUICK ROADMASTEB CONVKRTI- ble, low mileage, reasonably priced.
