DAIRY COWS IN EAST WASHINGTON 14,000,000 of the nation's 25,000,000 dairy cows are east of the Mississippi River. Critic Praises New Book By Commentator EricSevareid By Charles Mercer NEW of the large audience which listens to Eric Sevareid's commentary on the news over CBS Radio each week-day evening doubtless enjoy him for a variety of reasons. But the reason why one frequent listener enjoys his comments was more apparent after reading Sevareid's new book, "Small Sounds in the Night," a collection of his capsule remarks on the American scene during the Eisenhower administration. E-xcellent Writer A reading of this delightful book reveals the qualities thai set Sevareid apart from the average commentator. He is, first of all, an excellent writer; one could call him the superior stylist of radio news writing.

The foremost quality of his nightly broadcast, however, is that he does not try to say everything. He merely tries to say something. This is a rare quality in news broadcasters: the recognition that one shot on target is better than bird shot all over the landscape. Besides trying to cover nearly everything, many broadcasters their writers believe that the spoken word is somehow different from the written word. They are enamored of short sentences.

They cannot seem to comprehend the value of the leisurely approach such as this January 1953 broadcast from "Small Sounds in the "The municipal press has been telling us about the thousands of businessmen, society ladies, lawyers, would-be appointees and lobbyists about to descend on this capital city for the many people with those debased dol- BETTER MAKE Stove Furnace Repairs Now! It's quite clear that hundreds will escape injury only by the skin of their mind." Rhythmical Pattern What a whale of a fine time some professor of radio news writing would have hacking up that lead. Yet it falls rhythmically on the ear, with the greatest clarity of meaning.

It is, forgive the pedantic phrase, in the finest tradition of what used to be called "the informal essay." Sevareid often finds significance in the seemingly and the seemingly important he sometimes reveals to be utterly obscure. Thus in March 1954 he spun a delightful five minutes on the human foot, beginning: "This is probably the most superfluous discourse since the day the big war broke out and H. V. Kaltenborn analyzed the Archbishop of Canterbury's prayer. But the great affairs of state will have to get along without my advice for one evening while I consider the burning question of the human foot." Bench Lacks Qualified GOP WASHINGTON President Eisenhower may have to look outside the judiciary to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sherman Minton.
