Whitehead attended the Marion Township High School and served 43 months in the Army, 13 of which were spent in Germany.

He works at Allen Industries in Herein. The couple is living on a farm in the Birdwell Communitv, Route 2, Creal Springs. JOHNSTON CITY GROUP. Hartwig of the Foreign Language Department, Sou thern Illinois university, and his sixth grade elementary German students were featured in the Lincoln School PTA meeting in ihz school in Carbondale Monday nteht.

Mrs. 4 Mary Morris is program chairman. The students, from Lincoln and University School sixth grades, un dertook the study of Gesman last October on a purely voluntary basis. Hartwig, who says that a child ot nine or ten finds pronunciation of words in a foreign language much easier than after he reaches college age when his speech habits are set, has conductd the class as an experiment. Since the class is not compulsory, he has emphasized, to the students, the fact that they are doing valuable experimental work which will indicate the feasibility of mak ing foreign languages a regular part ot the grade school curriculum.

Lesley Wilson, first vice president; Gilbert Holmes, second vice president; Miss Viola Miller, secretary and Miss Gavle Wilson, treasurer. A gift was presented to Miss Margaret McHatton, who has retired after teaching 34 years in the Sparta Grade School.

Sixty graduates will receive their diplomas and pins at the graduation exercises which will be held in the St. Louis University High School auditorium at 2:30 p. m. Bouquets of spring flowers adorned the room. Miss Pulcher presented Miss Wat- kins with a pink rosebud corsage, a gift from the bride-elect's fiancee.

Rose Watkins of Carterville, Mrs. Ollie Jackson and son, Allen, and family, of Carbondale, and Mr. and Mrs. John D. Spiller of Cobden visited over the weekend in Essex, with Wendell Payne, who is home on furlough.

Wendell expects to go overseas upon his return to camp. Grange Bells Return To Johnston City Mr. and Mrs. Grange Bell and children, Nancy and Grange have returned to Johnston City from Cape Girardeau, where they spent the winter. Mr.
