college start Saturday The lOth-ranked Hurricanes defense convinced him While Walsh a sophomore following in the footsteps of Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde passed for 234 yards and one touchdown defense battered Florida quarterback Kerwin Bell on the way to a 31-4 season-opening college football rout that marked the end of the intrastate rivalry for five years knew our defense would do a good Walsh said after the Hurricanes sacked Bell five times and intercepted three of his passes I know they would do that great a job In beating Florida before an Orange Bowl crowd of 77224 Walsh accomplished what Testaverde andflerrtie Kosar artotherheralded predecessor at Gators in his first start I'- The sophomore from StPauI Minn completed 17 of 24 passes and threw for more touchdowns and fewer interceptions (one) than either Testaverde or Kosar did in losses to Florida in 1983 and 1985 respectively extremely proud of Steve Walsh his composure and his said Johnson who is 3-1 against the Gators is a happy day but then again it is a sad day because the last game of the series for a Johnson said were fortunate to win three of the last four games The interceptions of Bell came as Florida State regained the lead at 13-7 when fullback Williams punched in from the 2-yard line to climax a 10-play 78-yard drive Florida State visits East Carolina next Saturday FSL's directors may not approve Mets' PSL franchise Larry Stephenson Executive Sports Editor To uncomplicate the situation simplify the matter: There are 14 teams in the FSL which presently is the largest minor league in all of basdeball These seven teams are owned by major league teams: Fort Lauderdale Yankees Vero Beach Dodgers Winter Haven Red Sox Dunedin Blue Jays: Clearwater Phillies Charlotte Rangers and Osceola Astros These seven teams are privately owned: St Petersburg Tampa Fort Myers Lakeland Miami West Palm Beach and Daytona Beach (until contracts are signed) Approval of the franchise sale of the Daytona Beach Admirals to the Mets would mean major league teams would now own eight of the FSL's clubs Down the road MacDonald sees that as a problem I will inform the directorsowners of this and let them make a MacDonald said think it will have much bearing but it is important that it be pointed In essence what MacDonald is saying is future majority votes in league meetings would sway toward those clubs operated by major league teams For instance the privately owned teams have player development contracts (PDC) meaning while the teams are privately owned they receive players under the PDC An example would be the Tampa Tarpons who had been receiving players from the Cincinnati Reds Ironically the Reds bolted last week and announced they were no longer engaged in a working agreement with Tam-pa For the privately owned teams the PDC calls for major league teams to provide a 25-player roster pay player salaries hire the manager and coaches Turn to Stephenson on page C5 good news and bad news concerning the New York purchase of a Florida State League baseball franchise The good news? St Lucie County baseball fans all dressed up with their new $7 million spring raining stadium will have FSL baseball immediately beginning with the 1988 season The bad news? The FSL Board of Directors may not approve of the sale In a surprise move this week The News Tribune learned the Mets quietly bought the Daytona Beach Admirals franchise in the FSL from owners Blake Cullen Jerry Vale and Elaine Rosenthal Purchase price was not disclosed In fact all parties say nothing is official until contracts have been signed including the league However not one of the parties deny the sale The News Tribune learned late last Wednesday the deal has been verbally agreed upon by the Admirals and the Mets In fact club officials have called a Thursday press conference in I Port St Lucie to presumably announce the sale George MacDonald Jr president of the FSL says he is not overly concerned but he has some reservations am not overly MacDonald said while neither confirming nor denying the sale was made I am compelled to tell the directors what the league.
