A game is circled for a variety of reasons, with the prime factors being an injury to one side or the other. When the overunder total is circled, it is for inclement weather. When a game is inside the circle, there is limited action. Open is the opening line for the week, current is the up-to-date line, and OU is the overunder line for each game. HR-IP Los Angeles Deer rf Felder cf Sveum 3b 4 0 2 0 0 10 0 3 112 Morgan Lit IS Johnson surrenders part of his salary so Los Angeles can acquire free agent, stay under salary cap. Magic Johnson was credited with another assist Wednesday, only it wasn't on the court. Johnson voluntarily surrendered part of his salary so the Los Angeles Lakers could acquire guard Terry Teagle under the NBA's salary cap limits, General Manager Jerry West revealed. Under league rules, no team can exceed $11.8 million per year in total player salaries. The amount of money Johnson gave up was not disclosed, but an informed source said it was "a substantial amount, in six figures." The 31-year-old guard reportedly will earn $3.1 million next season.

Although Johnson becomes the first player to be taken up on such an offer, Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls earlier said he would give up part of his salary so his team could acquire Walter Davis. Davis, however, re-signed with Denver. CHARGER MOBBED San Diego Chargers nose tackle Joe Phillips was attacked by three men and severely beaten early Wednesday after leaving a Mission Beach bar, police said. Phillips, 6-5 and 275 pounds, suffered a skull fracture, broken nose, three broken ribs and a broken facial bone near an eye in the attack, police spokesman Bill Robinson said. "Three males apparently jumped him," said Robinson.

"One of the men had steel-toed boots and they struck Mr. Phillips with their fists and with the boots." The three assailants remain at large, police said. TRY, TRY AGAIN The Goodwill Games, which lost $70 million in its first two editions, will go forward in 1994 in the Soviet city of Leningrad, Turner Broadcasting System Inc. decided. The games, which failed to attract a world-class field in many sports this year at Seattle, probably will be televised in part by ABC in 1994, TBS said.

ABC would broadcast only on weekend afternoons. TBS has been looking for corporate sponsors to underwrite a large part of the costs for future games. Pepsi has been mentioned as a possibility. SOCCER TRYOUTS Tryouts for the Girls Illinois State Holmes tion, school president Edward i Foote said. The university has yet to receive an invitation to join a conference, and school officials have yet to make a recommendation to Miami's board of trustees, athletic director Sam Jankovich said.

The university will make a final decision by Oct. 16, barring unforeseen developments, Foote said. POOR TASTE The executive producer of the television show "Coach" apologized for insulting Buffalo during a promo that ran at halftime of Monday, night's NFL telecast. In the promo, actor Jerry Van Dyke, who plays an assistant coach in the ABC-TV series, said the Buffalo Bills would lose no matter what the final score of their game against the New York Jets. "Even if you (Buffalo) win, you lose," Van Dyke said.

"You still have to go home to Buffalo." "I apologize to the people of Buffalo. It was uncalled for," said Barry Kemp, the series' chief writer and executive producer. "We'll put something positive on the show to make it up." ANOTHER STAR Greg Gurley, a 6-5 swingman from Overland Park, Kansas is the second high school senior this week to make an oral commitment to play basketball at Kansas. Gurley averaged 21.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists for Shawnee Mission South, last year's unbeaten Class 6A state champions. Greg Ostertag, a 7-1 center in Duncanville, Texas, announced Monday he had orally committed to attend Kansas after considering Syracuse and Kentucky.

The early signing period for high school basketball players begins Nov. 14. LEMIEUX OUT Mario Le-mieux was hospitalized as physicians performed tests to determine the source of the Pittsburgh Penguins center's back pain. Dr. Charles Burke said he was not optimistic about Lemieux's chances of playing in the Penguins' season-opening game Oct.

Players should park by the tennis courts and walk to the fields.

Players are to bring shin guards, water bottle and soccer ball. There will be a $20 tryout fee. Times are as follows: Under 18, a.m.; under 16 and under 14, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. All players should arrive 30 minutes early for registration. The Springfield tryouts are one of four to select the state squad.

That team will compete against other state teams in invitiational tournaments and regional competitions. For more information, call Bill Wake at 787-9095. CCIW'S BEST Millikin volleyball player Jennifer Camden has been named player of the week in the CCIW. In two conference matches last week, Camden had 13 kills, 14 digs and four blocks. In the current national Division III rankings, Camden is 10th in individual blocks at 1.33 per game.

Teammate Kim Halusan ranks fourth in indvidual blocks at 2.09. As a team, Millikin (13-4) is fourth in blocks at 4.54 per game. NFL COMPROMISES A federal judge cleared the way for NFL teams to sign from three to five "practice players" a week for the season, settling part of a suit over last year's reserve squad. The agreement allows each team to keep from three to five inactive players at a minimum salary of at least $3,000 a week. Players on reserve squads last year were paid only $1,000 a week, compared to the $50,000 minimum for an active player, and had no freedom of movement.

Practice players may negotiate higher salaries, but teams may spend only $325,000 per club on the squads for the rest of the season. The players also remain free agents, so they may sign with other feams during the season.
