I .2 ims incongruous riddle was solved nicely in parts Tuesday by designers Pauline Trigere, Paul Parnes, Davidow, and Edward Abbott as the New York Couture Group's semiannual fashion press week began its second day. More than 200 fashion writers swilled cold coffee and puffed un mhibitedly on cigarettes as Miss Trigere took up the problem the new nonsmoker who suddenly has more hands than she knows what to do with.

Her models demonstrated there are piemy 01 ways to appear poised while kicking the nicotine habit if you are sure the clothes you wear have plenty of construe tive work for fidgety fingers. Miss Trigere 's fashions for spring offer thm nine inches wide stoles to fumble and clutch, one armed shawls to drag, wide capes to flail matador style and sheath dresses and suits and coats, all with pockets, pockets, pockets for resolvedly digging in to with clenched fists. The pockets are not for candy bars, however, for a single extra calorie would surely show through Miss Trigere's chiffon sheaths. But the French woman's most startling figure hugger, however, is a bold, horizontal striped, knit evening gown that seems to have been inspired by a sagging Gay Nineties tank suit. Even her husband's closH is design inspiration for Miss Trigere.

From his shirts she borrowed buttons, which she sewed in quantities around the midriff of an otherwise plain navy sheath. His tuxedo furnished inspiration for a short black jacket with satin collar that; seems to be a handsome cocktail suit. Then the jacket perls off to become a startling decolletage dress for formal wear. The executive suite possibly furnished inspiration for some of Miss Trigere's dignified looking pin striped suits. Add to these Trigere ways of making a wardrobe look twice its size some reversible capes and coat costumes that change their appearance faster than Miss Trigere can say, "voila." Paul Parnes went along with Miss Trigere in her sometimes mannish mood with man tailored jacket suits and trouser pleated skills. But they were so snugly fitted that feminity triumphed anyway.

Jacket Dross Davidow was also in a practical spirit, with suits that shed jackets become demure dresses, and long overblouses that flatteringly overcame the bareness of some sheer costumes. Although designer Abbot raved about his cone shaped silhouette, wide at the hem and narrow at the waist, the fashion editors showed more interest in his models' petticoats. The mannequins spun on their heels to reveal lingerie that was exactly the same floral pattern, at least the same hue as the costumes they wore. Tims fashion writers noted that slip that shows today is not a social error, it chic.
