ESftarSS Friday November 30 1984 Treasure Coast SHOWCASE Fort PIrctPort Amelia Farharfl Her legend ves III I I wl IE Qi III Gi I There is an Amelia Earhart Lane in Harrison There is an Amelia Earhart Lane in Harrison NY -i and an Earhart Road at Oakland Calif International Airport Memorial plaques and markers are conspicuous in Boston Honolulu Miami Washington DC and 20 other American cities and towns as well as Burry Port Wales and Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean Elementary schools in Chicago Houston and Miami bear Amelia Earhart's name and the United States Air Force operates the Amelia Earhart Hotel for Women in Wiesbaden West Germany Exhibits of her medals pictures and books can be seen in a hundred libraries and there are major displays at Purdue University and the Smithsonian Institution The American Legion has the Amelia Earhart Post Number 678 in Los Angeles and the Lockheed Vega airplane she used to solo-fly the Atlantic Ocean thrills school children at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia She greatly influenced the development of two of the largest and most powerful women's organizations in the world Zonta International and the Ninety-Nines and they yearly give scholarships in her name to women aeronautics students A commemorative airmail stamp was issued by the United States Post Office July 24 1963 and there is even a flower named "Amelia Earhart" a hybrid yellow rose-giant buff dahlia Eighth grade students still write poetry to her memory tough managing editors remember her in nostalgic editorials US astronauts acknowledge her exploits with awe a million Americans tote Amelia Earhart luggage and a hundred million people the world over carry the Earhart legend in their hearts Fred Goerner 1966 "The Search For Amelia Earhart Newt TrtMitpMo by Ruts Dama Amelia Earhart memorabilia from the Putnam collection: books a bronze bust the famed flier's helmet goggles and scarf Amelia husband created the legend of1 iffy mm By Julie Enders-Hudson SHOWCASE Editor Betty Gould a special education teacher at the Amelia Earhart Elementary Scool in Hialeah was sitting in her comfortable living room reading over the text of a speech written by Fort Pierce native Cynthia Putnam-Trefelner On the cover George Palmer Putnam and his wife Amelia Earhart Putnam in 1935 BinneyCrayola heiress who died in 1982 was married to publisher George Palmer Putnam when her husband became infatuated with aviatrix Amelia Earhart in 1928 Although the famed aviatrix was credited with breaking up her marriage numerous Amelia Earhart biographers fail to mention that after the divorce Dorothy Binney Putnam married Congressional Medal of Honor winner Frank Upton before Earhart and Putnam tied the knot And only one of the biographers bothered to note that the two women Amelia Earhart and Dorothy Binney Putnam were initially good friends "SHE (AMELIA) went into seclusion at Putnam's home in suburban Rye New York to write the book about the Friendship flight "20 Hrs 40 Min in a matter of weeks wrote author John Burke in 1970 "Her hostess was Putnam's wife Dorothy Binney Putnam an attractive in- "I really like this part" said Mrs Gould quoting: "She (Amelia Earhart) 'made' her own world and in doing so helped shape ours" "I like that part too" said Mrs Putnam-Trefelner "But it's not entirely true Amelia Earhart made her own world but she couldn't have done it without my grandfather Because of my grandmother I like to set the record straight MRS PUTNAM-TREFELNER'S grandmother Dorothy Binney Palmer a Photo courtesy of CyntNa Putrum-Treftlner IN 1928 Amelia Earhart (center) joined Dorothy Binney Putnam and Mrs Putnam's eldest son David for a beach outing Ms Earhart was living with the GP Putnam family that year writing a book about her flight across the Atlantic Ocean Turn to Amelia on page 4.
