The American dollar became the standard of the world's financial mar. ket when English pounds sterling, francs, lires and virtually all foreign exchange went down to new depths in an avalanche of bills that poured into the New York exchange markets from American manufacturers seeking pay for war munitions. It developed that every contract In America calls for payment in American dollars, Insuring that the immense losses will be borhe to the last penny by foreign buyers not by American manufacturers. REPLY TO AUSTRIAN NOTE. The State Department made public Monday the reply of the United States rejecting the views set forth by Austro-Hungary in a note contending that exportation of war munitions from America to Austria's enemies was "not consonence with the definition of neutrality." The note insists that the American Government Is pursuing a strictly neutral policy and adhering to a principle upon which It would depend foi munitions In the markets of the world in case It should be attacked by foreign Power.

The news of the sudden death of David Walker was passed from friend to friend Tuesday afternoon as a shock barbed with pain and sorrow. When this paper last came to you the deceas ed was upon our streets greeting his friends, today all that is mortal of our friend and townsman is at peaceful rest in our Silent City. The news of his sudden death cast a gloom over the whole community, for all of the forty-two years of his life had been passed among us, and every heart was touched with sympathy for the stricken ones, from whose home circle he had fled.

None but those who have sat in the shadow of sudden deaths can justly weigh such a shock and sorrow as this. Leaving home, as usual, last Muiday afternoon to attend to some work on his farm near town, he was suddenly stricken about 3.30 o'clock, while load' ing baled hay and died in about twenty minutes, never having regained con sciousness. Thus closed the life of one who has passed into the joy of his Lord. Much has been taken from the devoted par ents and sister and brothers, sweet ties have been severed, but much is left. The Christian's hope and fadeless memories are theirs.

He was a faith ful member of the Christian church. having Joined it in early Now the devoted boy who remembered his Creator in the days of his youth, has finished his course and reached the heavenly goal while yet an Infant in the race of life.
