ews Tribune -Sunday November 1 1981 Section Miami stuns No 1 Penn St 17-14 'Canes hold off late Lion charge Auburn nips Gators 14-12 former top-ranked teams Michigan Notre Dame Southern California and Texas down the upset road by failing to launch a consistent attack until the final uarter The swarming urricane defense was led by Chickillo tackle Lester Williams and defensive back Fred Marion Penn State played most of the game without remier tailback Curtis arner who reinjured a hamstring muscle in the second period and didn't return time to go and score a touchdown had our chances to win and Auburn had their chances to take a big lead in the first the Florida coach said defense would let the other team's offense take The Auburn touchdowns came on a 3-yard run by freshman quarterback Clayton Beauford and a 1-yard run by freshman fullback Ron O'Neal Florida was in position to win the bruising defensive game after Hobby fumbled at the Auburn 31 with 2:34 left The Gators used three running plays to get into position for Clark's errant field goal try The victory evened Auburn's record at 4-4 while Florida fell to 5-3 Florida also disdained a possible winning touchdown with 5:51 left in the game when Coach Charley Pell elected to settle for a 39-yard field goal on a 4th-and-3 play at the Auburn 22 Auburn dominated play in the first half but could manage only a 14-9 lead at intermission because of five turnovers including four fumbles The Tigers scored the first time they got the ball driving 63 yards in eight plays with Beauford scoring on a 3-yard sprint for a 7-0 lead with 9:28 left in the first quarter Beauford fumbled on next possession to set up Florida at the Auburn 47 and Clark booted a 30-yard field goal AUBURN Ala (UPI) Auburn Coach Pat Dye knew just how Florida Coach Charley Pell felt Saturday the Gators missed a field goal with 1:06 to play and subsequently lost the game 14-12 A week ago Dye watched his team fell 21-17 to Mississippi State in the final 60 seconds feel exactly the opposite of the way I felt last said the Auburn coach Dye said he had been worried about how his team would perform after the heartbreaking loss against State have to be proud of our football team because last week was very very hard to he said worried about us all week long The only thing I had confidence in was that we had been up for every Dye said offense hindered itself with five tost fumbles including two inside the Gator 20-yard line and one pass interception did everything we could do to handicap the defense especially six said Dye Florida had a hold off Penn State in the second half told my team at halftime it was the best first half ever seen a college team Schnellenberger said Miami quarterback Jim Kelly and receiver Larry Brodsky who hooked up on an 80-yard completion for the only touchdown showed different attitudes toward the victory think the game was an upset in their scheme of things but it in Kelly said felt all along we could beat iM cm But Brodsky was as excited as Kelly was blase the Super Bowl the World Series the best thing that ever happened to me in my whole the senior receiver said Despite a furious fourth quarter rally in which the Nittany Lions battled back from a 17-0 deficit Penn State became the fifth No 1 team to run into an ambush this year The 19th-ranked Hurricanes held a 17-point lead Into the final 11 minutes of the nationally televised game but the Nittany Lions then scored twice over a three-minute span to narrow the final margin to 17- bending without breaking and the Cowboys were sent away without even a field goal try The first Ram end zone entrance in three weeks came with 1:57 left in the first quarter when senior quarterback Jay Crocco scored on a keeper from the one yard line A punt touched foot and was recovered promptly by Bill Chapman on the 19 yard line to set this up Kam Kadivar rushed for 12 of his game high 73 yards in this drive LaBelle answered this when Thomas ground attack with strong aerial support the LaBelle Cowboys (3-4) edged the John Carroll Golden Rams in overtime 12-8 last night at Lawnwood stadium always tough to lose in said sullen coach Dave Verdllo who saw his record fall to 4-2 But it might have been a little tougher for the Cowboys Under the leadership of ruarterback John Thomas offense had several sustaining drives but a failure to capitalize appeared could come back to them Two futile Cowboy scor- Penn State's kicking game also faltered as Brian Franco missed four field goal attempts ranging from 22 to 51 yards The Lions scored with 8:51 remaining in the rainy second half on an 80-yard drive capped by a 13-yard completion from Todd Blackledge to tight end Mike McCloskey The drive was highlighted by completions of 17 21 and 16 yards from Blackledge to receiver Gregg Garrity Penn State got another opportunity a minute later when defensive back Paul Lankford recovered a fumble by Miami running back Smokey Roan on the Miami 26 and capitalized one play later with a 26-yard screen pass to backup tailback Williams with 6:53 left Brodsky's 80-yard touchdown came on the first play after Franco missed a 22-yard field goal attempt Brodsky gathered in the pass on the Miami 48 and barely outraced the Penn State secondary The Hurricanes made it 14-0 with 5:09 left in the first half when Kelly found receiver Mike Rodrigue alone in the end zone for a two-point conversion first two field goals came in the first quarter On the first possession they moved from their own 35 to the Penn State 11 on pass completions by Kelly of 17 12 and 19 yards but the march stalled and Miami came away with a 3-0 lead The next time Miami got the ball Miller connected again The Hurricanes started on their own 33 with a 16-yard completion from Kelly to Rodrigue A completion to Mark Rush for nine yards and two runs for seven yards put the ball on the 25 Kelly then missed on two pass attempts forcing 42-yarder The final 23-yard field kickoff return Saturday night to spark 17th-ranked Florida State to a 56-31 rout over Western Carolina Allen's 332 yards topped the previous season high by Southern California's Marcus Allen who ran for 289 yards in Saturday's game against Washington State The previous freshman record was set by Amos Lawrence of North Carolina at 286 yards in 1977 The Semlnoles 6-2 also scored on runs of 7 and 1
