Her Backfield Was In Motion Cl VERQ BEACH Fort Pierce Central has a new offensive threat to worry about for next Friday night game against Vero Beach High The Iiufiam unleashed a new weapon Friday night a girl player in walloping Eau Game 38-6 to run season record to 8-1 Barbara(Bobbie) Best the Tribe's first female football player got in for one play late in the fourth quarter She was called for illegal motion Meanwhile fullback Eddie Frazier ran for 176 yards in 20 carries and me touchdown to spearhead a 313-yard rushing attack for Vero Beach Held scoreless in the first period the powerful Indians ran wild for 24 points in the second quarter as they coasted past the Commodores now 2-7 for the season By JERRY SHAW Newt Tribue Sports Witter Players on the Vero Beach High School football team don't even notice the unique addition 1 they have on their squad during practice at foe Citrus Bowl this week Since women have awakened to foe beauty outside of the kitchen it has became common to see them in places previously forbidden to young ladies and that includes the football field Alice live in the kitchen anymore and neither does Barbara Best or Bobbie as she is known to her friends This junior flanker had not played until Friday in an official game but she has made foe Indians' varsity squad and has played in several scrimmages Bobbie sits on foe bench quietly by herself during practice while foe other members of foe team do their usual bit before a workout booting around footballs and tossing them in every direction making foe field almost as dangerous as a mine area It doesn't bother Bobbie who just sits there waiting for things to begin She does not look like the type of girl you would expect to play football (whatever that means in these post liberation days) but then again it was hard you don't go to school that But it might be just one of those rumors -Bobbie's parents mind her participating in the sport and she has 'had no real problems except when it comes to dressing which she does in the girls bathroom One time she was changing in the girts locker room before a game and was almost invaded by a horde of opponents who were to dress in that room Luckily the coach asked if anyone was in there before they entered and she let them know with a yelL She practices as hard as the other players but has not seen much action because at her position there are also three seniors and two juniors Bobbie is happy to see the sports world opening up to girls particularly the sports of softball basketball and gymnastics which will be featured for girts this year A friend Lisa CoUucd who wanted to go out for the wrestling team says of Bobbie: "She does what she wants to do it's a free world" had no training and she said 'I want to go and she did guys like her They enjoy her I think all guys enjoy having a girl around They all respect her there is no A friend of hers says Bobbie's boyfriend who is in ROTC at the school is with her all the way on foe subject of playing football Bobbie acts shy and says playing because like football She has been interested in the sport since around the third grade and this was her first chance to go into an organised football team "A lot of girts said like to go out but said Bobbie been on it this year I think some more will be out next Bobbie said she will be going out for the team again nothing Guys will be guys and when they are around Bobble on the field they can be the same way they are anywhere else-sometimes in a real joking mood they act real Bobbie says laughing have a chance for a big joke on Homecoming It seems it is a tradition at the school that juniors and newcomers on the football squad are given mohawk haircuts by the other players on that day if they are caught There are some who are saying they might go after Bobbie i have to she says go to Homecoming if SPORTS 16 195 Page 17 MEMPHIS Term (UPI) -Junior tailback Terdell Middle-ton scored two touchdowns Saturday night
