MONROE EVENING TIMES, MONROE. WISCONSIN. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6. 1951 PAGE SEVEN Monroe Gridders To Be Small, Fast Veterans Return At Many Spots Monroe high school's 1951 grid candidates have a tough record to equal if they wish to finish in the same place as last year's championship eleven. Monroe won six straight conference games last season to capture the Southern Ten conference crown.

Coach Gay Steensrud's team completed the conference season with the smallest team in the league. This year's aggregation will be nearly as small, but probably even faster than the 1950 team. Chuck Robertson, who scored three touchdowns and added three extra points for a total of 21 last year, was a speedy standout at halfback. He is back at his favorite spot this season. Rudy Speich Injured Rudy Speich, the other halfback last year who scored two touchdowns and two points for a total of 14, also will be back to give Monroe two'of the top halfback potentials in the league.

Speich has an Infected toe now, but is expected to be in shape in a few days. Vic Chambers, a sophomore this season and outstanding with the junior varsity team last year, may fill in the backfield on offense. Gone from the backfield will be such stars as Dick Blanc, Ken Davis and Bud Pilz, but Backfield Coach Arch Edwards has been working this week with candidates to fill those spots. Bob Geyer, a transfer quarterback from Darlington, is improving and may get the call at the signal post. Two Fullbacks Set Virgil Wenger and Jake Schillinger are top candidates for the fullback spot.

Line Coach Fred Simpson ran his candidates through blocking practice last night. Newcomer to the ranks this season may be Tom Holcomb, transfer from Rockford, who will be the heaviest man in the line if he improves. Dick McArdle was a first string end last season, catching one touchdown pass for six points, and is expected to see a lot of duty at the end position again this season. Bob Carter, a quarterback last season, may see action at the other end position. Bill Beach, Gary Quinn, i Zoller and Bill lenatsch are other top candidates in early practice.

One of the Southern Ten's expected top contender this year for championship honors, Baraboo, will be Monroe's first conference foe in a game here Sept. 28. Former Green Bay Packer Stan Heath is heading here to take over for Keith Spaith, Calgary Stamped- er quarterback who recently broke the little finger on his passing hand. Heath played with the Packers in the National Football league after graduating from the University of Nevada in 1948. In 1950 he played in the Canadian league with the Hamilton, Tigercats. Early this year Heath tried out with the Cleveland Browns, but was released. pickup 16,000 miles Very clean Open Sunday Little Eddie Gaedel Finally Strikes Out On Three Fast Ones Sycamore, 111. Midget Eddie Gaedel was finally struck out. The 3 foot 7 inch mite, who was used as a pinch hitter by the St. Louis Browns, drawing a walk and also an ouster from the American league by President Will Harridge, was humiliated last night. In a game between two Sycamore amateur teams, Gae- del sauntered to the plate to pinch hit (for a price) with one man on base.

Gene Davis, a southpaw, looked him over and tossed a "semi-fast" one. "Strike!" shouted Umpire Paul Lund. Davis delivered again. "Strike!" bellowed Lund. Then Davis balked and the runner went to second.

"Try me again," boomed Gaedel, slashing the air with his 27-inch long bat. Davis wound up and let go. "Strike three, you're out!" roared Lund. "You're the worst umpire I ever want to see," yammered Gaedel, and he trudged through the dust back to the bench. Rosen and Easter were the big guns last night as the Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, and regained first place in the American league. Each walloped a home run with a man on base to help the Tribe rack up its 16th victory in 17 meetings with Detroit.

The Indians wrested the lead from the New York Yankees, who dropped a 4-2 decision to the visiting Boston Red Sox. The triumph moved the third place Sox to within three games of the defending champions and left them four behind Cleveland. Boston trails the Tribe by only one in the important "lost" column. New York's Giants refused to give up their fight to overhaul the National league leading Brooklyn Dodgers. A sweep of a doubleheader from Boston, 3-2 and 9-1, enabled them to Brooklyn's lead to five and a half games.

The Dodgers whipped the Philadelphia Phils, 5-2.
