fcl) CQ to to Ul OX to 00 00 es 0) cL to TJ 3 to Winning Contract WITH By HOWARD SCHENKEN and RICHARD L. FREY The weak no-trump bid shows a balanced hand of from 12 to 13 points. Perhaps its greatest virtue is that it narrows the range of the opening bid of one in a suit by removing from it all minimum bids except those baseii upon distributional assets. And perhaps its greatest weakness is that it shows its lack of power to the opponents as well as to partner. At any rate, the most effective weapon against the weak no-trump is the penalty double.

Here is a hand from the match in which the Roth team defeateil the Kaplan team in the recent Masters Knockout Team of Four championship. It illustrates what can happen when a weak no- trump faces a bu.st hand and opponents who know how to handle the situation. Vul: NORTH (D) N-S S. A 7 5 II. 9 3 D.

2 Uidinondii All Kmnt West (MUrhrll) nine Irad; Hrart When the weak no trump partner has a weak hand, his only hope of escaping a severe penalty is to get out of no- trump. When this retreat occurs before the no-trump bid has been doubled, it is often successful; it might also have been successful in this case against a less able pair than the formidable partnership of Ira Rubin and Victor Mitchell. With a heart suit that promised a virtually certain game and only three clubs many players would have bid the hearts on hand, llie result would have been no triumph for the weak no- trump; East and West would simply have bid their nonvulnerable game. But at least it would have averted the disaster that actually befell when West elected to double. South had no way of telling that he had found his best suit when he bid two clubs.

Seeking to improve the situation, he ran to two diamonds. Again, though he could not double diamonds himself, West refrained from bidding his hearts, giving East the opportunity to double if he could do so. He could and did! East overtook the king of hearts lead and returned a low trump. After three rounds of trump, East shifted back to hearts. South ruffed the fourth heart and led a club, but West had held onto all three clubs and retained a stopper, while East had discarded one club and was able to ruff king.

A spade continuation knocked out ace and East-West won the remaining tricks to round out a 5 trick prmalty. Cliampioiiship Chess By BLAKE STEVENS Texas State Chess Champion Jack London wrote a story about two fighters, a classic which concerned itself with the conflict between an aging but experienced man and his young, vigorous antagonist. On the chess level that same conflict is evident. Only here the younger player usually has stamina plus knowledge of the openings pitted against his older op only weapon experience. An age difference of 15 years makes the struggle approximately even.

A wider gap favors youth. Recently Stephen Jones, 18, won the Southwestern and placed second in the Texas State Championship, Bobby Fischer, 15, tied for fifth in the Portoroz Interzonal tourney in Yugoslavia, ahead of a field of players that reads like a who of Larsen, Paclr- man, Filip, Matanovic, Bronstein, Auerbach, and others. Jerry Milburn, 17, runner-up in last Southwestern, is an untiring, walking encylopedia on chess openings. In the following game he quickly obtains a good game. His middle game prospects are excellent.

Then a slight error in judgment (trading queens and heading for the end game) dissipates his advantage, and he loses his way in the ending. SiClMAN llEEENSE. Stevens Frolli cm Wkile J. Polilieal Parrot Talked Too Much TUCUMAN, Argentina, (Reuters) parrot was for getting mixed up in politics. The parrot was trained to chant slogans supporting the deposed ex- President Juan Peron. It had been given by a party member to a local businessman, Julian Amado Ale, a Peronista diehard. But it was hard on wife, Delia Luisa, who one day decided to put an end to such provocative language. She killed the bird..
