Opening lead: Heart king. Kaplan and Sheinwdd use the 12 to-14-point no-trump as the opening bid with all balanced hands within those int ranges. At any rate, Kaplan found himself in a three no-trump contract on a hand where it was obvious the other team would probably stop at three or four diamonds. It therefore, international match point scoring which tends emphasize medium swings but softens the penalty of large would have to go all out to make the contract. Declarer ducked the opening heart lead and won the next counting out seven-card heart suit when East discarded a low spade on the trick.

Now the oroblem was: the contract could be made if the clubs did not split but the diamond suit was favorably only if declarer did not first try to cash club tricks, for the diamonds would block the run of that suit unless North retained a side suit re-entry. So, after considerable calculation of the probabilities and the vagaries of IMP scoring, Kaplan led a diamond and finessed the jack. He never took a second trick. Elast won and led ar spade, slaughtering king. West ran the rest of the heart suit and East took the last four tricks with good spades.
