BASKETBALL Times Record Newsl 4B Saturday November 23 1991 Bandits battle back stop Texans 103-96 in scoring and also pulled in 12 rebounds The Texans also got 16 from Rob Rose 14 from Jeff Ma-jerle and Trent Jackson and Larry Smith had 11 points and seven assists The Texans were without the services of Kurt Portmann for most of the night as he was in foul trouble and only played 16 minutes Michael Ansley the CBA Player of the Week led Birmingham with 24 points followed by Farmer with 22 and Skeeter Henry and Michael Cutright with 15 each The two teams were tied 24-24 after the first period and a 20-6 run in the second quarter by the Texans helped put them up 51-46 at the half Wichita Falls shot 74 percent from the floor in the third quarter and led by as many as 14 but were only up by 11 heading into the final period of play Texans note The Texans cut their second player in as many days as backup point guard Curtis Duncan was released late Thursday night That leaves the Texans with nine players BIRMINGHAM Ala A 10-2 run to open the final period got the Birmingham Bandits back into the game and they made the most of it as they came back for a 103-96 win over the Wichita Falls Texans in Friday night CBA action The loss is the second straight for the Texans and drops them to 4-3 for the season while the Bandits improve to 4-3 Birmingham won 4Vi standings points to 2Vt for the Texans Wichita Falls returns to action on Tuesday night as they take on the Sioux Falls Skyforce in a 7:05 game in DL Ligon Coliseum The Texans led 82-71 with one quarter to play but the 10-2 run enabled them to cut the lead to 84-81 Birmingham made it a 20-8 run to take a 91-88 lead but the Texans fought back to go up by three 96-93 with just over two minutes left Birmingham took the lead for good with 1 12 left on the pair of free throws and a three-point play by Jim Farmer with 396 seconds left put the Texans away Cedric Jenkins had a season-high 26 points to lead the Texans UT dumps Princeton AUSTIN (AP) Dexter Cam- bridge scored 18 points and Texas showed off its own brand of defense Friday in beating Princeton 57-46 in the second round of the pre-season National Invitation Tournament With the victory Texas (2-0) advanced to the semifinals of the NIT tournament in New York on Wednesday against Georgia Tech an 84-67 winner over Colo- rado State Princeton (1-1) was eliminated from the tournament after an opening round 58-47 victory over Monmouth (NJ) Texas had gained the quarterfinals with a 104-83 victory over Washington Princeton led 32-31 when guard BJ Tyler started the crowd of 15621 screaming with a steal and two assists including behind the back pass for a 35-31 Texas lead The Longhorns switched to a zone defense with just under 10 minutes to play and Princeton failed to adjust as Texas widened its margin It was Texas' lowest point total in four years under Tom Penders but it also was the best defensive effort for their coach Princeton has led the nation in defense the past three years and held Texas far under its home court average of 98 points a game since Penders became coach The previous offensive low for Texas under Penders was 65 points last season and the best 1 defensive effort for a Penders team at Texas was 49 also last season With Tyler running Texas' offense the Longhorns had only six turnovers to 16 for Princeton which was led by 6-8 freshman Rick Hielscher who scored a game-high 19 points Princeton known for its outside shooting made only two of 12 3-point attempts Texas one of four The only other players in double figures were Ben-ford Williams with 12 points and Terrence Rencher with 10 Tyler had nine points and a game-high five assists Texas made 16 of 23 free throws Princeton 4-of-4 and did not shoot one in the second half when Texas outscored the Tigers 30-20 after leading 27-26 at Indians beat Lobos move record to 3-0 BROWXWOOD Texas Midwestern State won its third straight game of the season without a loss Friday night blowing out Sul Ross State University 103-83 in the first game of the Howard Payne Classic The 3-0 Indians will play Howard Payne at 8 pm Saturday Gume Ibarra and Bart Beasley were MSU will play the Angelo State-St winner for the championship Saturday night Lubbock Christian which led 49-47 at halftime lost for the first' time this season The Lady Chaparrals who are in NAIA District 4 with MSU are 3-1 SAN ANGELO Texas -Sarena Carter had a big night with 20 points and 18 rebounds Friday night to lead Midwestern State's Lady Indians to a 90-76 win over Lubbock Christian in the semifinals of the Angelo State Tournament The MSU junior hit 7 of 12 from the field and 6 of 10 from the free throw line But Trish Young was the leading scorer for the Lady Indians with 27 Lorene Fobbs had 13 points for Georgia Tech 84 Colorado St BJ SMU overcomes Conner SW Texas press 80-54 Kelly scored six points in a 12-2 Rider run to close out the period and the Raiders were on top 20-18 after one period Allen took over early in the second quarter as lead gradually grew The Raiders led 32-23 with 4:48 left in the half and then 41-28 with 1:50 remaining But the Knights closed out the quarter with six straight points making it a 43-35 game at the half "Allen and Kelly are our two best scorers against the press so we put them at the other Lunn said "We feel we can hurt people in the open court with those two what we did A 3-pointer and a three-point play by the Knights midway through the third quarter enabled them to make it a seven-point game with 2:43 remaining 52-45 But the Raiders came back with a 7-3 run to close the quarter and led 59-48 heading into the final period The fourth quarter was all Rider as the Raiders scored the first 10 points of the period and never looked back They outscored the visitors 21-6 to take the 26-point win Cash led the Raiders in rebounding with nine while Curtis Foster had eight rebounds and Kelly had eight rebounds and three assists Jermichael Moore also had three assists seemed flat out Lunn said "A team like Arlington Heights has lots of quickness quick hands We were worried about that They were able to keep our offense out of full-court press caused the Rider Raiders plenty of trouble in Friday game at the Raider Fieldhouse When it was working right it helped the Knights go up 6-0 early and enabled them to lead for most of
